Tires extending beyond the fenders seems to be really popular with Jeeps, what is it like in the rain and snow ? must throw the stuff up in the air on the cars behind you? I see it on here all the time looks like a lot are around 2” or so, in the state I live in and most around the northeast you cannot pass inspection with them sticking out you can also get a ticket for it.

You are correct that they can make a mess, but a side benefit to rock rails, side steps, etc. is that they tend to help minimize the splatter. There are also some mud flap options, like rokblokz that are easily removable for off roading.

The truth is that while often illegal, it is extremely unusual to get ticketed for overly exposed tires. The people that get tickets for that usually did something else incredibly stupid, dickheaded, or dangerous, and the ticket was just an additional write-up. Even a standard speeding ticket is probably not enough to get noticed for over-exposure.

When I still lived in an inspection state, everyone knew which shops to go to if you were pushing some limits. The dealer you bought from is often a good choice.

Personally, I don’t care for the look. And, yes, they do make a mess on the sides of the truck. But to each his own. Kinda like a hair cut. If you like the look, wear it. You’ll get no criticism from me.
I bought a used Super Duty once with MT wheels sticking a good 6” outside the fenders. Ran an ad on Craigslist one night that I’d swap even for factory alloys with anyone who would change the tires over. Had 17 responses the next morning and a like-new set of King Ranch wheels by the afternoon. Win-Win

I personally don't see how people do it. My stock Rubi. has marks and chips on the door hinges and the rear fenders really bad.
So, when I installed the 37s with 4.5" BS rims, I also immediately installed RockBlocks flaps too!

Finally, I can drive with some confidence that the truck won't be chipping more paint daily.

I do it because I wheel my jeeps and know Im going to bash a tree or rock at one point or another  so there will be damage regardless. A rock or two every few months on the hinges is nothing that the front gets hit with from trucks on the highway.

After a year with the JT and 35's that stick out a decent amount, I still have no chips on my hinges. Took 3 years for one to happen on my JK. Maybe it is just how roads are cleaned where I am vs where you are

Another slight benefit is with the wider stance it allows more roll angle before ” oops “

Always heard ....not sure it holds true with new Jeeps...that for every 2-3” of lift you need 1” wider stance on both sides to offset roll....obviously you get to some height where it is just impractical to go any wider, but if you increase your center of gravity you had better understand the risk or take measures to mitigate....

Yea it's illegal here in PA. I don't really think you'd get pulled over for it or brought up as an issue as long as you're respectful and weren't doing something crazy to get you pulled over. I know it won't pass inspection here, but I think that's why people hang onto stock tires/wheels, so they can swap them on to get inspected and then when they pass, put the bigger ones back.

What is the widest tire you can put on the sock rims without the tires sticking out?

There's some concern about dinging your own rig but I think the bigger concern is when you get up to speed, launching a stone (caught in the treads) into the vehicle behind you.

The person at our state highway patrol that is in charge of tire width infractions for the entire state lives in our town, and is named Dave Shears. Ask me how I know his name, LOL. He thinks it is his mission in life to ticket every vehicle with tires sticking out more than 1/4" beyond the fender flare. I've lived here for 25 years, and so has he. One of us has to move, but until then it isn't worth it to me to have tires sticking out past the fender flare. That was one of my primary factors when choosing new wheels to go with my 37s. I did the best I could, and found a set of 17x9s with a +1 offset. A +12 or +18 wound have been even better. Its too bad there are not enough manufacturers that make wheels that are legal. I'll keep my 35s that are mounted on the stock wheels. I know for a fact I will be getting a fix-it ticket, and will have to put the stock wheels back on to pass inspection and have the ticket dismissed. Grrr!

Tires sticking out, body damage, stress on steering and suspension components, looks stupid, illegal in some areas, with the right wheels and tires, you can still make the truck perform and look good, take it from someone who has been modifying, lifting, and driving for 50 years, have a nice day.
