during record breaking heatwaves...
It still derated multiple times at low 80°s temps while climbing hills weighing just 8000lb GCVW

I wonder if removing the plastic grill would help. It would be a simple test.

Could be for someone else......Mine wont come off without unbolting the winch!

Back in the day we used to put dry ice on the carburetor intake manifold at the drag strip. Totally different application and obviously impractica. I’m not sure just opening the grill to let more hot air in onto the coils would help.

I think it might. FYI look at a JT grille and a JKU grille, the JK has bigger ribs and tighter mesh. The JT has thinner ribs and larger opening mesh in a effort to preserve the look and increase flow. If you are ok with altering the iconic look (jeep engineers were not) that should open up the world of cooling to you. Taking off the grille is a good cheap test to see if anything good happens.

Is your winch blocking airflow? I’m around 8000lbs GCVW, and will be heading to Death Valley in a week. Hit 100F out in SD but didn’t derate at all.

Its a Zeon 10s.....pretty low profile tucked in in the OE steel bumper. I do also have the low Mopar winch guard tube too.

112° here today and pulled an 8% grade unloaded without oil temp reaching even 250°

How much room is there for the air to exit the engine compartment? Decades ago, the circle track racers found that enlarging the exit path helped a lot.

Jumped over to the Wrangler site and there’s a thread talking about options to keep the diesel models cooler. One idea was to move the horns. I noted the same this morning when I was looking in the grill. They block a small area of the upper corners.
But then again, as other smarter members on this forum have said, ”Do you really think that an engineering team with millions in funding would overlook the fastest and easiest way to possibly improve cooling ?”...

More experimenting over at the JL site.

anyone try this? Not the 392 hood but the stock Rubi hood and a taser.

No one has overheated that I’m aware of.

the JT’s tow rating is neutered due to cooling capacity limitations. Hence the idea of using the 392 hood
The latest SAE standard requires towing up something like a 10% grade for 15 miles in 90+ degree temperatures with the AC on high.

I wouldn’t bother unless I personally had trouble.

Remember, in a very rare situation where the vehicle is running hot,you can always turn on the heater to enhance your vehicles ability to cool itself.

It effectively turns the heater core into a radiator.
The reality is that the latest SAE tests represent a worst case scenario.

Most new vehicles tow ratings are based not on the vehicles structural ability to carry the load but rather on their ability to shed heat in these worst case scenarios. Whether it is engine cooling, transmission cooling, or braking.
