It is a DMZ zone between my hot coffee cup and my wife's chilled coffee cup. The dimensions of that space are precisely calculated using the laws of thermodynamics to prevent transfer of heat between the two cups.
It is mentioned in the gasoline supplement manual - page 32.

It is not there in EcoDiesel because that space interferes with DPF passive regen.
