Heads up, do not expect updates if you buy a 8.4 from infotainment. They are boot leg and not updatable.
That is kind of a known issue whether you got an 8.4 from Infotainment or from a salvage pull directly yourself which is where Infotainment gets theirs also.

Basically if put a 8.4 in a vehicle that was not originally built with one from the factory, your SOL for updates. Only way out of it is to get the dealer to flash the sales code for the 8.4 to your Gladiator BCM and that seems to take an act of Congress to get Jeep to approve that.

Went through this when I had a RAM and everybody over there bitched about the same thing. Only knew of one person getting the sales code added to their vehicle and it seemed to be a one off before FCA shut that down.

The ability to easily have the Sales Code attached to the VIN for the 8.4 Uconnect on the trucks that did not come factory equipped with it.
Not sure why they'd nix that when they allow the codes for other things to be added - IF IT WAS AN OPTION for that truck to begin with.
If it wasn't an option at the time of the build of the truck it could never be added.

Been there with other options. It can only be added to the VIN if it was ever possible for it to be there.

It's not uncommon.

It's very, very difficult (if not impossible) to add in a factory Audi MMI system (full audio w/ nav) if you only had the base AMI system. I looked into upgrading my A4 because it didn't have navigation or bluetooth. With the newer interiors having the screen up high and controls down low, you can't really install an aftermarket system and have it look stock appearing.

But in my investigation, the parts alone off ebay would be $1500+ (used) and I'd have to figure out how to change the computer to recognize the "upgrade". It's not a simple plug and play like it should be.

You actually don't need to leave the car on at all while it updates I set mine to off, it asked me if I wanted to update so I hit yes and left it off. When I came back it was done
Same with mine. My screen actually said to turn ignition to off to update. Went into work and when I came out and started the engine, it said it was updated, but it would take a couple of cycles in the off position to take effect.

There was more below the surface with FCA than just allowing the 8.4 radio sales code to be added. For vehicle built with the 8.4 to begin with, they also had a GPS and cellular antenna connection that would need to be added to the new host vehicles that did not come with it. Then there was also the issue of the Uconnect Subscription based service that in theory if they allowed the sales code to be added after the fact, those new modified owners now running a 8.4 radio would be entitled to ask for and get the Uconnect service. There was a lot of variables out of FCA's control in that they did not want to support this unauthorized mod and only support factory built vehicles with the 8.4 radios.

Here is my post on the RAM forum back in the day talking about it:

Here is the post from the member who was the "one off" talking about trying to add more and FCA told him "no Bueno".

I scheduled mine to update at 10:59pm. Wife drove it the next day without issue.

Like adding certain other things, there's always another item that has to exist - the antenna, etc. - but I do get/understand the subscription services, the free trial periods and such - things that involve more than just FCA and the dealer.
If it was only antenna - no big deal - buy and add. But then you have to involve the other services.
That part makes sense.

The "one off" guy I mentioned on the RAM forum is a unicorn in getting the 8.4 sales code added to his RAM. He was the first person in the RAM community to mod from the 5.0 radio to the 8.4 radio in the RAM and developed the harnesses and ran a side business selling them.

Him being the first got him under the radar with his local dealer and RAM/FCA corporate telling the dealership to flash the 8.4 sales code for him without understanding what that would open up with them shutting down subsequent requests after the fact.

That is why I hesitated from upgrading to the 8.4 on my Gladiator and feel bad for those that have done it either by themselves or through companies like Infotainment because OTA updates and OEM support is not there and probably will never be there for those people.
