I know I’m going to catch grief for this question. Why go larger wheels and tires

I feel like I’m the only person here that has not gone to larger wheels and tires. Now I get those of you doing hardcore anything off road. Larger tires along with a lift give you more traction, better break over, and more ground clearance. However if you are not doing the Rubicon all the time what is the point? Adding lifts, tires, wheels , and gears costs thousands and hurts what little fuel economy we have. So I guess I want someone to tell me why this is a must have mod.

I off-road, but not quite "hardcore", because this thing still has to get me to work. I haven't lifted, but the last trail I went on, I scraped the skid plates more than I would like. I have the factory Rubicon 33s now, so I'm going to 35s. This will give me an inch more ground clearance and also protect my wheels a little more off-road. The mpg hit from 33s to 35s will be pretty trivial, so I'm not worried about it. If after I put the 35s on, I still scrape, then I'm going to do a couple inches of lift. I'm also already adding more skid plates for the areas that the factory skid plates don't protect. For those that don't off road, the appeal is the same as changing rims on any other vehicle. It's simply the easiest way to make the vehicle custom and yours.

Either I need the extra ground clearance off road, or I am over-compensating for something.
I haven't figured it out yet.

I’m still stock and there is a thread on here for stock folks. When the right deal comes along I’ll upgrade to stock Mojave wheels and tires. I don’t have a lift and really don’t want to risk messing up my “road manners” The truck looks better lifted with the right wheels though….

It's not a must have. Simple. ?

Pictured below are my 4th and 5th Jeeps, only 2 of which ever had larger tires and lift. Some people like the way it looks and that's all that matters. Some people want the mods on the trail and not need them than need the mods and not have them. Then there's some of us who off-road daily. Also mileage would be awesome to have, but I'm not sacrificing a good time to save a little money.

Jeep Gladiator I know I’m going to catch grief for this question. Why go larger wheels and tires 1627526568547

I have done some skid plates, just got SS3 fogs, did headliners, side steps. I had a purpose with all of those mods. My rear rockers are sand blasted at 3000 miles. I figured putting on larger tires would make this even worse.

It’s only a “must have” if you need or want it. Many people do it just for looks. Many do it because they want more ground clearance.

I’ve owned a Liberty, 3 JK Rubicons, and now my JTM, and I only put larger tires on the Liberty and the JTM.

The Liberty came with 29s, so a lift and 32s gave it a huge increase in capability, which I definitely used.

My current JTM, like all JTs is very long compared to all my previous Jeeps, and thus has a worse break over angle than any of them. It was easy to fit 35s without any other modifications and it not only gave me an inch more clearance, but also gave a lot larger contact patch for increased traction, and the larger rolling diameter helps to smooth out bumps. Since I spend a lot of time out in the backcountry (25% of the miles on my Jeep have been off-road) it was a simple change to help out. …And I won’t lie, I think it looks better with 35s than 33s.

Any rubbing with the 35’s?I’ll need studded snows in winter, but the Hakkapeliitta come in 315/70/17. And do you need special wheels with the Mojave.

They need to make up for something they feel inadequate in.

Funny but that’s what I say about people who feel the need to criticize others for doing something that doesn’t affect them at all…:bandit::angel:
