It is because the gear teeth are thinner More teeth
Actually, its because the pinion head is smaller, with less teeth in contact with ring gear. Smaller the head, the more chance for teeth to shear off.

488’s and 35” Falkens. RPM’s in 7th & 8th @ 71 MPH.
What is your mpg in 8th gear at 71mph out of curiosity. I am going the same set up 4:88 and 35’s

488 gears on 35’s here. I’m getting 18.5 mpg
Mostly city
Based on screen readout or hand calcs? My screen says 18.2 but hand calcs tell me 16.3.

I just got 5.13s on my M/T and I was @ 2500rpm in 5th gear @ 70mph on my way home from LBI. Running 38" tires.

5.13s are best in my opinion. I hear many people with 4.88s wish they had done 5.13's . Not the other way around. If you are adding heavy accessories 5.13 will help on the acceleration side as well.

There are actually fewer teeth on the D44 5.13 ratio vs the 4.88 ratio.

D44 4.88 is 44 teeth on the ring and 9 teeth on the pinion.

D44 5.13 is 41 teeth on the ring and 8 on the pinion.

Actually, its because the pinion head is smaller, with less teeth in contact with ring gear. Smaller the head, the more chance for teeth to shear off.
Smaller pinion does not always equal less tooth contact area.

Check out the link below. Scroll to where it says "Gear size & strength info". I realize most this info is about the 9" which is a unique axle, but look at the comparative data for the D60. The D60 5.13 ratio is stronger than a D60 4.88 ratio. The 5.13 ratio has a larger tooth contact surface area.

Just received a quote from a dealership in Central Florida for a 4.88 Mopar re-gear for $3,240... I have a JT rubi 8 Speed Auto. That was about ~ $1,000 more than I was expecting. Believe it or not that is supposedly with a special discount they are offering me due to a misunderstanding when I bought the Jeep (Long Story). Is that what I should expect for a re-gear now or am I being fleeced?
