By "yesterday" you mean the last 125 years, right? ICE hasn't been around this long without reason. There isn't a better way. I wouldn't bank on full electric in whichever vehicle you want anytime soon.
Try 150 years.
Brayton - liquid fueled internal combustion engine, early 1870s.
By 1900 they were very well developed. I have a couple amazing 1912 and 1914 engines and by the 1910s, there was an OHV V8 engine.

So happy to hear this engine is coming! I don't mind my Pentastar around town but she's a bit of a dog on the freeway.....plus I like inlines.
If these had come with an I6 I'd have been all over it so fast...........
I don't mine the 3.6 Pentastar - we've had good luck, but having a very long history with the I6 in cars, trucks and tractors, in a heartbeat I'd have had one. An I6 diesel is a crazy work horse, too. My big Case tractor was almost unstoppable.

I'd say Stellantis is following the path of making what people want (and will buy). They're developing full evs too, but phev is what's going to be the majority of the sales in the next decade as it's a much easier sell than a pure ev.

PHEVs can still be full electric for most peoples daily commutes so they get savings like an ev albeit at less efficiency than a true ev. On the other hand they can be big and un-aerodynamic, they can still tow, haul, and operate in remote locations, and they don't give range anxiety or the need for costly incomplete infrastructure.

The new rivian has a 180kwh battery to only go 300 miles and that's under no load. Towing a medium trailer range was cut 80% and that's just not a realistic sell for anyone with a boat, fleet users, RVrs, road trippers etc. The PHEV on the other hand gasses up in 5 minutes if you need to work like your current truck but then you plug it in over night at home and save the environment on your commute the next day.
The laws of physics can be tough to overcome with marketing and hype. The Rivian chargers in remote locations are powered by diesel generators with diesel powered trucks bring in the diesel fuel. Makes zero sense. I’m not against electric vehicles but there is so little critical thinking going on. How do we “save” the environment by electrifying cars that contribute about 17% to pollution and push the energy requirements to the sector that pollutes about 25% ( power generation and distribution). We’ll realistically need a mixed approach, better batteries, upgrades and expansions to the power grid, and some good old ICE holdouts to do things that electric vehicle cannot do.

Naw, not all of "farm country".
Driving around the country I've seen areas where there wasn't a green tractor anywhere.

Case of the era I had was white, then Case/IH was IH red, JD of course green with yellow, Ford was blue (except for the early Ford like the 8N which was gray and red), Deutz-Allis (formerly Allis-Chalmers) orange.
Then there's Massey-Ferguson (or Massey-Harris of old) which were read as well, John Deere industrial was dark yellow.

Just messing with ya. Saw the other day that Case had released of all things an all electric Backhoe/Loader.

Back on topic: been reading that the inline 6 is rumored to have three different power outputs ranging from 360 to 525 for the HO with another option somewhere in between.

Meh. ICE is yesterday's tech. My next vehicle, and hopefully a gladiator again, will be full electric.
I am a die hard gas or diesel guy, you can take your electric engines and sink them in the ocean.

I will never own an all electric vehicle and hopefully my lady never wants one either.

Wow, THAT Case would save your ears. Hours of a droning engine aren't good. I'd love to hop in and take that thing for a spin. I've got some tile to lay in our yard this spring.

325 hp would really get my attention on an I6 and are they really using the HO moniker they used with the 4.0? (I have the 4.0 liter HO decal on the spoiler of my Eagle)

The lack of noise would be soooooo nice.
I mistyped, it should have said 360hp as the entry level engine. That would be a very welcome bump.

'Tornado' - sounds like a Harbor Freight power tool name! ?
Brush up on Jeep heritage…

Tornado was the first (IIRC?) U.S made OHV I-6. It was made by Kaiser when they owned the Jeep badge in the ’60’s. It was debuted in the ’64 MY Jeep Wagoneer and Gladiator Truck.

The Tornado would be very historically accurate to re-release in the current Jeeps as a heritage item.

I had a ‘64 Wagoneer with the 232 Tornado, 3 speed floor shift, D20 t-case, D-44‘s with 4.10 gearing… that Jeep had so much torque, it’d climb a tree if it could find the traction…

Minor correction - first OHC.
OHV existed before the OHC Tornado.

If you think we won't get taxed another way (ie per mile basis) on EVs you're going to be sorely disappointed. Road maintenance $$$ need to come from somewhere. I fully expect EVs to have to disclose mileage to get new plate tags each year.

In my state this happened a couple of years ago. A yearly registration fee was implemented for EVs of $100 to recoup lost tax.

I6 + manual transmission would = my dream drivetrain, but I wonder if the manual will be available with the I6 -and, also, I like my current Gladiator so much that I'll likely keep it a long time no matter what else comes out.

The original Jeep OHC was also used in the M715 military truck.
