Why didn't Jeep foresee my stupidity?

Since around 5,000 miles, mine has always had a clattering noise at idle.
Loud enough to be annoying to me. Certainly, not quiet enough to walk away forgetting to shut engine off.

Your not the only stupid one...went to dinner to eat and while 2 beers in the waitress informs me that I left my lights on...was actually still running for maybe 1/2 hr.

Ha! Same thing happened to me on a road trip. Came out after dinner looking and thought, "Why are my lights on?!"

I have been impressed by how quiet the 3.6 is at idle. Not anymore....

1900hrs last night I parked in my basement, unpacked what little shopping I had, locked the JTR and left. 0530hrs this morning I went down to the jeep to go to work and to my surprise the headlights were on...so was the engine. I had left the thing on idle for the best part of 10 hrs!

So Jeep....it's obviously your fault, in this day and age, that the engine wasn't rough or noisy enough for me to notice I'd been a complete Twunt and left it running (the basement does have extractor fans whirring).

joking aside, it didn't bing at me as I got out and without the key, I'm surprised it didn't shut itself down after a period of time.

Anyway, no harm done, car warm when I got in and I'll be sure to double check from now on!

So I did something very similar last week at the store, parked, got out, locked the car, did my shopping, and came back found it running. LOL, come on JEEP, ha.

My wife and I were delivering food last week in her Ford Escape. I was driving. She had the fob in her coat pocket. When she exited the vehicle for the delivery with the engine still running, it honked twice. I was glad it had that function. Wish my 2021 JTW had it too.

I did this going into the gym. Came out and I had left it on....
Haven't done it since but after that one time I've made sure I check/don't get distracted as I get out anymore.

We have this thread, where many with 2020s and 2021s wish they had this function, and then another thread where 2022s are wishing they didn't. Ha! Too bad it's not something that can be enabled/disabled at will.

My old car honked if you got out with the fob. I'm glad the gladiator doesn't. This time of year, I'll leave it running and locked, with the keyfob in my pocket, while I drop my daughter off for daycare.

That's why, beginning with the 22s, the horn honks three times when you exit vehicle with the key fob.

My GF's Bronco sport does that ^ when she leaves the vehicle while it's running. For as annoying as it is, it will most certainly prevent this from happening... Which I have done as well... Twice...

What sequence of events causes this to occur? Are owners relying on the fob proximity limit for shutdown instead of pressing the main switch?

Not at all, completely my stupid fault. But IF an engine was left running accidentally it'd be nice if the lack of key proximity started a process that ended with the engine off.

Cheap fix, remove the suitcase muffler. Great sound, no drone. Helped me when driving, M/T. Couldn't hear the engine revs, now I can.

What work did that entail?

Simple fix - diesel. It'll make noise every time you get out... unless you turn the engine off

I can think of two instances of similar events.
1) Shot a round of sporting clays with a buddy. We got back to the parking lot and I noticed his Ford Explorer running. I jokingly asked if he was trying to keep it cool inside.
2) I was fishing out of Venice Louisiana and started talking to a guy at the dock because I was admiring his boat with it's smooth running Yamaha 4 stroke outboards. The next morning we got to the dock and I noticed the engines still running, mostly because I saw the water pump indicator shooting its stream of water. About that time the guy walked up and I asked him about them running and he freaked out. He got an extra 12+ hours on both engines!

I've done it too. My Mustang was so loud at idle you couldn't miss it but this thing is so quiet.

I’m betting the engineers (and lawyers) deliberately choose to keep a car running in case someone has left their infant/child/grandma/dog in the car.
