But then you deal with the fact that you live in NJ, which arguably is a worse issue than the fuel door.

Oh. much much MUCH worse. But you won't scratch yourself when fueling.

Though some things that are true.

If the car has a single exhaust, the fuel filler is almost ALWAYS on the opposite side.
You can see what side the filler is on by looking at the fuel gauge. There is always a little arrow pointing left or right indicating what side the filler is on.

I learned this when selling enterprise software and driving a lot of rental cars. I was talking about tis frustration with a Hertz counter attendant and she told me this. I didn't believe it but its true.
Not clear in this pic - and I have seen a couple of exceptions, but the little arrow thing holds in the JT as well -

I've noticed this too! But the gladiator broke the "rules". We have a single exhaust, on the same side as the filler.

How are you supposed to hook the cap to the door? It looks like there's a place for the strap to go but it never stays there for me. On my bmw's, there's a peg on the bottom of the cap that then sits into the gas door so it's not flopping against the paint.
Something I had done earlier after installing the fender welting was to take a 6” pc of the welting, cut a pc of the hotel key I used to poke the welting into place and stuffed it into the end of the 6” pc just to stiffen it up, then pushed 4-5” of that 6” pc into the gap on the fuel filler door above the cap hanger. The loop holding the cap is too stiff to stay over the hook and tends to let the cap drop onto the fender. Now when I hang the loop over the hook I tug the welting down beside the loop, wedging it into place on the hook. No more banging on the fender!

Better yet, we'll have endless posts of people bitching about key fob size... talk about waste of time. Wear shorts/pants meant for men and you'll be fine.
