I've never put the lanyard on that hook. I just rest the edge of the cap on it.

I've knocked it off before, but never had it pop off by itself.

I'm right handed.

Hi All:
First off why is the fuel door on the left side when the gas tank is on the right side? if it was on the right side would it be better?
Trucks are always on the left. Passenger vehicles “cars” are on the right. On the right for cars because if you need to fill fuel on a roadway you will not get struck by traffic. Still doesn’t explain why trucks gas fills are on the left.

Wive's tale.
Nissan, for example, it depends on the model. Why?
Engineering and rules.
there are requirements that the gas tank be on the widest part of the car, away from the fuel lines, the exhaust, electrical wiring and the like, no regulations specify where the gas tank should be located.

Doesn't take long to find exceptions.
Mazda 3. Japanese. Shares a platform with the Ford Focus. Passenger side fuel door.
Camry, civic, altima on left.
Most Dodge I've seen are on left.

If the it was on the passenger side I would not own a gladiator… anyone that puts a fuel door on the passenger side of an American automobile should be drawn and quartered!!! Just what I want to do is get out walk to the other side of my truck to fill it then walk back around to drive away. Fucking retarded! “Not intended to insult you just engineers who place fuel doors on the passenger side.”
but more to the point I have no issues filling mine I also am right handed…

It's got to be an inside joke at Jeep. I put the wire in there at least 2-3 times before it stays put, but just glancing back at it will make that thing jump right out. My Honda had a molded u-shaped spot on the door that held the cap really well.
I bought something off of Etsy that does this. Haven't used it in the wild yet. It just came in.

My favorite video on YouTube is this dude from Texas who included the little plastic lip that you set your gas cap on while fueling in his list of 5 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT YOUR GLADIATOR.

I know which guy you're talking about. His early videos were alright but all he posts now is click bait BS.

I am left handed and always owned a European car with a right side fuel filler. It works for lefties.

Nonetheless, it took me about 2 weeks to develop the habit of using my right hand to fill the Gladiator. I've never been scraped by it. In fact when I saw the title of this thread I thought someone was going to complain that it didn't lock.

And by the way, the fact that it doesn't lock combined with the fact that when it clicks off the tank is actually full makes the Gladiator about the most hassle free vehicle I've ever owned to refuel.

(I am a dyed in the wool topper upper. In each of my past cars I could get an extra 1.5 -2 gallons of fuel in by spending a few seconds topping off.
With the Jeep I can get at most .3 gallons in. Its not worth it.

How are you supposed to hook the cap to the door? It looks like there's a place for the strap to go but it never stays there for me. On my bmw's, there's a peg on the bottom of the cap that then sits into the gas door so it's not flopping against the paint.
Bend the plastic a little and it will stay. Just a little bit and you will have no issue. I'm talking about the plastic rope holding the cap on. Line up where it hooks on the rope and bend that section slightly.

Yup Wives tale.

Though some things that are true.

If the car has a single exhaust, the fuel filler is almost ALWAYS on the opposite side.
You can see what side the filler is on by looking at the fuel gauge. There is always a little arrow pointing left or right indicating what side the filler is on.

I learned this when selling enterprise software and driving a lot of rental cars. I was talking about tis frustration with a Hertz counter attendant and she told me this. I didn't believe it but its true.
