Who knew 1 sentence could cause all the animosity. I can’t even get reliable T-mobile/Sprint or AT&T service at my house but apparently I live in a big city with lots of towers. Who knew.

Exactly! It basically comes down to faster service in populated areas but less or no coverage the further out you get.

Having worked all over the world over the past 2 decades I can definitely agree that the US is way behind in cell coverage.
5G sucks in Houston for me. I have AT&T and an iPhone 13 Pro Max. Here’s my speed from a couple of minutes ago with 2 bars. I can barely load a YouTube video at lunch break without wifi lol. Oh well

AT&T did give new phones to get 4G and 5G...
4G is still pretty good in the "boonies"...
It is not. Maybe your boonies are different than mine. But, no, 4g is not ubiquitous in the boonies (literal Boonies, there is a nearby town called Boonsboro). My phone switches from 3g to no signal on my commute daily. But mostly 3g, and never 4g, for about half of my commute. Also, no 4g at my place of employment. My phone is capable, there's just not ubiquitous 4g or 5g in the Appalachians of PA (or MD, VA, or WV). Neither does well in the thick forested areas, or in the hills. On my drive to NC to visit family, there are several long periods of 3g only in Rural VA. Same on the drive to Illinois from here, until I get close to Pittsburgh.
I'm optimistic that it will improve. Where it doesn't work is where I'm most screwed if I don't have a signal. No emergencies yet, so I just get annoyed when my streaming music stops working.

My wife's 2016 Volvo uses a 3G modem and all of the Volvo "safe and secure" connectivity features, which Volvo advertised as being included in the price of the car for TEN YEARS, will stop.

I'm actually happy about it. If you've seen the thread I started on disabling the LTE modem on the Gladiator you will understand why.

Either way, Volvo has a problem because they have a contractual obligation to provide connectivity until 2026.
How to you disable LTE on gladiator??

The modem in my 2013 Leaf is 3G. It came with a 2G modem, but Nissan offered a $200 upgrade path to keep it working when 2G was turned off. I got a reminder email this morning that 3G is scheduled to shutdown today and this time no upgrade path is available.
I would think that in a 2013 Nissan Leaf, the 3G modem would be the last thing I’d worry about not working anymore :CWL:

Well, that’s also AT&T. They like to lie and label stuff 5G and it’s just their spruced up slow 4G, they’ve been doing that for years lol. Maybe that’s true 5G but that’s pathetic speeds. On Verizon Ultra 5G in downtown Denver I’ve seen 700mbps, kinda blew my mind. Up where I live? I’d be lucky to see 5 lol.

I know. There are bigger holes here in Pennsylvania too. But it's the map they provide, so all I had to go by. There's coverage in the Gulf of Mexico, but not at my job.
I live in Fayette county. T-Mobil has no service in the area. Verizon has the most coverage in the county, but still has holes. Have one friend who has to walk up his driveway to the street to use his cell phone. His house is in a valley.

Where in the hell is Boonsboro? I searched for it and couldn't find it.

Who knew so many people still used or cared about 3G. A kindle? Money grab? It’s been 22 years people.
If you leave the city and go on an adventure in that fancy Gladiator you might develop an appreciation for that old fashioned 3G. My POS iPhone 12 seems to drop to 3G often.

Sure. But the problem is 4g isnt even in enough places yet let alone 5g. I don't have a problem with 5g (or 4g). They are awesome, when they work. But it's just not terribly pervasive in my locale yet. Sure I have it at home, but not in the hills between my home and my work. Or for that matter, even at my job. I'm all for progress. But there are a lot of gaps in the current maps.

See all these holes? Unfortunately, some folks live there. They need to fix that problem first. Maybe they will.

A lot less holes than 3g....

And that's why one company CEO said that for big chunks of KS they aren't in a hurry to change to 5G because it would mean huge chunks of KS would lose service.
People in the big cities with dozens of towers within a short walk need to get outside of their own world and look at the rest of the country.
Fact is, the USA is one of the worst "developed countries" as far as broadband and cell coverage.
People in the heavy population centers will be celebrating the 5G thing while others will be wondering where the hell their coverage went.
5G is really impacted badly by trees, buildings, even atmospheric conditions.
We barely get 4G and when that drops out in bad weather things drop to 3G - and when that goes away, it means chunks of time we'll have no service, no internet.
Then maybe it's time for the backwater 3rd world undeveloped parts of the US to get with the program and stop being envious of them fancy city folk with all them G's they got. Just wait 5-6 years and them fancy city folks gun'a have another G and be up to six I recon.
