$150 for a map update??

I got the update for $100 on sale last summer. I only did it as a backup satellite based system for places with no cell service for my trip from PA to Yellowstone and back. I used it a few times. It was a bit of a PIA to do the update and took about an hour if I recall. Probably never update it again.

Google Maps and OnX Offroad have been great and I can take them with me in whatever vehicle I'm in or not in at all which is just as much. I can't believe auto manufacturers still charge so much, I think OnX is $30/year (for Offroad), Gaia $40/year. My InReach is more expensive of course, but that is far more useful than the Uconnect Nav.

As a software engineer (25+ yrs), Uconnect not being updated except by recall and at a dealer boggles the mind. I can't imagine a worse plan on their part, even for firmware updates. Also, that's finally one to my Taco & Forester over the JT, both my Forester and my 3rd gen Taco got auto-updates. Small, more frequent releases are way safer to do from a risk eval perspective.

It’s not horrible assuming you don’t use another service. I rely on google maps via Apple CarPlay and onX

Is this for real? 150 bucks for a map update? The thing isn't even a year old! How often do they release updates and are they even worth it? Roads in my area probably haven't changed in 20 years. Maybe it's more appropriate for those in big cities?

What a deal! I have a 2022 too. How much has really changed in less than a year?

Uconnect can be updated by the owner, there have just been no updates released to be installed.

Dealer updates are typically done only as the result of a recall or a head unit replacement that requires it.

There are some OTA updates, but they are rare.

So far, the only way to get a Uconnect firmware update without a service need has been to order a map update.

Ah, thanks for the clarification, that makes more sense. Totally misunderstood an earlier post that the recall updates were the only Uconnect updates.

I use Rand McNally. They do annual updates (which appear to be accurate) and they only cost around $20 for each update.

This is Crazy! I have a Jag SUV as well and I can download updates for my map and OS for free. Even my Jag app works for remote lock and unlock. Jeep is getting to be like BMW and others - charging for everything.

This stuff isn't free, somebody has to pay for it. The map update is provided by an outside company. Jeep could provide free map updates, but it would require increasing the cost of the vehicle for everyone, or at least for all those with the 8.4 Uconnect. Then they would be on here complaining about having to pay for something they don't want, need, or use. Charging those that will actually install the update is about as fair as it can be.

I'm old school. I have a Garmin GPS with lifetime free updates. I think they come out every 6 months or so, but I only update every year or so. Never was fond of the idea of a built in GPS. Tech changes to fast for something permanent like that.

Bananaman, I fully appreciate what you’re saying, but had to chuckle at the “I’m old school.” My version of old school was from when I used to deliver auto parts when I was young. I had to rely on stacks of street maps to navigate throughout northern NJ.

now we have these cool and fancy GIS programs like ArcScene that can make 3-D virtual images or Pix4D that can get accurate measurements. Its pretty cool

But it wasnt long ago when we used stereoscopic images and glasses to assess some field work and using chain measurements for area polygon closure instead of automated GIS and GPS tools that do it for you.

The sad thing is electronics still fail and a lot of the younger generation of employees, if their GPS failed in the woods 5 miles from the nearest road, they would have no clue how to get back. This happened last year with one of our seasonal employees and we actually had to send out a search party.

I remember when I was test driving my 2011 JKUR and one of the options was Nav, at the time I already had TomTom on my phone so went with just the Regular CD player (which I never used either :D ) with Bluetooth.

Fast forward to 2022 and now my JTR came with Nav I don't even use cause I use android auto and google maps.
