Is this only happening with 2021 models (per the title) or is it 2020 as well?

My wife and I both have older iPhones but at some point I’m sure we will upgrade. Hope this gets resolved.

Another random idea: have you prioritized the center console USB as your #1 option in uConnect?

If I am not mistaken, the Gladiator was sold to me as being Apple CarPlay compatible. Are you saying it is not?
Your vehicle is Apple CarPlay compatible. However, due to Apple's software configuration, it will not successfully play if you are connected to the center console's USB port.

Hey Courtney, Thanks for the info here.

That IR22.5 appears to be some kind of code level. Are you able to tell us when that code level was released? Also are you able to point to the Apple specification/documentation? (Totally unrelated ask are the uConnect software change logs published anywhere? I'd love to see 'new feature' and changes as they get installed.)

If that code release has been out some time and my truck has it, then I'd infer that CarPlay isn't disabled on that port - it just has some odd issue that makes it not officially supported and thus not fixable.

My CarPlay from the console port has gotten much better since iOS 14.4.1, and I understand that Apple may have changed some kind of requirement that isn't easily changeable/fixable in the JT console USB port.

If you could point me to the specification from Apple we may be able to find an aftermarket swap or put in an enhancement/bug request in on Apple's side.

Really appreciate your presence on this forum! Thank you
Good afternoon,

That's a great question and definitely something I can look into! I'll try to gather those resources for you and see if there's an archive released on Apple's side. I will keep you updated on what I find.

We appreciate all of you being a part of the Jeep Brand community!

Thanks,

Courtney

Took the truck in for a service yesterday and had the dealer document this as an issue.

Long story short, at check in, the service advisor said due to an issue with 11 and 12 phones, there is a problem on Apple's end that is preventing the phones from working correctly. Using CarPlay from the console would not be possible but he'd have the tech check on it.

The tech called their Star tech support for help. They told him there would be an update for the radio in Q2 or Q3 that may or may not address the issue.

They suggested contacting Apple regarding the issue as they feel it is on their side with the code in the phone that doesn't like the console connection.

So, we're stuck using the dash connection until the corporate behemoths can get off their collective asses and fix it.

I picked up my Rubicon Eco-Diesel this Saturday. On the way home I used a carplay2air dongle in the center console. Those are known to be flaky since a recent update. I probably had CarPlay disconnect and then immediately reconnect once every hour or so but it got worse this Sunday. It always seems to crash when context switching, e.g., answering the phone.

Out of frustration I pulled it out and went to using CarPlay with a cable. Much to my surprise I started seeing all the same issues folks here are reporting (luckily I just found this thread). This problem makes all the wireless CarPlay dongle complaints seem mild by comparison. I’m using an iPhone 12 Pro Max fwiw.

I haven’t seen anyone report this but in addition to CarPlay disconnecting after the audio breaking up, I consistently see the trail cam icon become greyed out when this happens and problems with Uconnect generally persist for some time after getting CarPlay to reconnect.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the iPhone is the problem. iOS 14.x has been a dumpster fire. The security problems alone are a major issue for any cyber security conscious firm with MDM. Wireless charging on my phone doesn’t work on many Qi chargers which is a common (software!) problem and bugs persist from the original iOS 14.0 beta.

What concerns me maybe more is that this issue, at least in my case, seems to leave my head unit in a bad state even after CarPlay reconnects. I need to experiment further since I’ve only had it for two days. In the meantime I’ll use the dash port.

Other than that and UConnect/XM Guardian being absolutely worthless, I love this thing. Thanks everyone for reporting/discussing this.

Some people had reported that updating to IOS 14.5.1 may have helped with or even fixed this issue. Maybe try that if still on an older 14.x version.

I’ve been on 14.5.1 since it came out. I have to be for MDM. I’m seeing the issue.

Another interesting thing. When I picked up the Jeep Saturday I could use the forward and reverse cams at any speed. Then Sunday I could only start them when stopped and they would work up to some low speed (8 or 15mph). So that functionality changed. Maybe there was an OTA update when I activated XM Guardian?

That’s a slightly different issue than when the camera was greyed out even when stopped after a CarPlay crash. I’m not real concerned about having the forward trail cam disabled at higher speeds. I do wish I could activate it at low speed though instead of having to stop first.

They are really good at pointing the finger at Apple, but Android is having the same problems.

Jeep knows full well the problem is high resistance in the circuit in question, but they aren't going to fix it!

Mine worked for 30 minutes since the last update and now the center console won't connect at all.

I just get tired of them lying to me! Just admit, the problem is your hardware causing too much resistance and you have no intention of fixing it!

Joined the forum today to document my experience w/ Apple CarPlay:

2021.05.21 - Took delivery of a 2021 Gladiator Overland (aka Artemis) with the Premium Audio Group (8.4" Uconnect 4C).
- CarPlay worked fine with two iPhones (10S Max and 12 Max Pro, both at iOS 14.5.1, 10S Max connected via Apple USB-to-Lightning cable in media hub [USB1] in dash; 12 Max Pro connected via Apple USB-to-Lightning cable from center console/armrest [USB2]). Car was driven for about 100 miles with multiple stops and truck being turned off and on. CarPlay worked every time we restarted the car.

2021.05.22 - Went to leave in the AM and CarPlay didn't work. Tried both phones on both USB1 and USB2. Both phones were charging but the media hub was showing that no USB device was connected. Deleted entry from CarPlay from both phones' settings and attempted to reconnect. No joy. Spent a few hours driving around and a few stops here and there, and CarPlay still refused to work. Came home, did a Google search, found this site: https://www.ikream.com/carplay-that-is-not-working-on-iphone-xr-32063
I had already tried everything listed except for one item about 3/4 the way down the page: "Optional solution: Disable USB Restricted Mode". Long and short:
1. Go into Settings
2. Go into "Face ID & Passcode"
3. Scroll to the bottom, and look for "USB Accessories". Mine (iPhone 12 Pro Max) was disabled (by default); I enabled it.
4. Exited Settings.
5. Turned on Artemis (but not as much as she turns me on...haha!).
6. Connected iPhone 12 Pro Max to USB1. CarPlay instantly came up and worked.
7. Unplugged iPhone 12 Pro Max and connected to the USB2. CarPlay instantly came up and worked.
8. With my phone still in USB2, enabled "USB Accessories" on the iPhone 10S Max, and plugged it into USB1. CarPlay instantly came up and worked.
9. Turned off Artemis, unplugged phones, turned on Artemis, plugged both phones back into USB1 and USB2, and CarPlay worked on both.
10. Drove for a bit, turned off Artemis. Turned on Artemis to leave, plugged both phones back into USB1 and USB2, and CarPlay again worked flawlessly.

I'm not saying it'll work for you...but it worked for me. YMMV.

Since another iOS update mine works great until I try to use a voice text then it glitches/hangs. Tried both USB ports too.

I have similar issues. 2020 Sport. I typically run my connection from the armrest, I believe USB 2. It works 90% of the time, but sometimes it won’t work at all on any port unless I unplug the phone, power off the truck, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in after startup. Recently it will start up CarPlay then after 2 seconds disconnect. Start up, disconnect. Seems to work fine from dash input. I do still have screen flickering regardless of input. If this were solely an Apple issue it would happen on all CarPlay units…it does not.

I just picked up a 2021 Mojave and the same thing is happening when my phone is connected to the center console port. Not on the front port. CarPlay locks up and turns off within 5 minutes or less. Very consistently. Glad to know I'm not the only one but not so glad that there doesn't seem to be a consistent fix

I have not tried again since I started this thread but appears it's still hit or miss and beyond annoying.
