If you add some fuel lubricity additive and do not run the truck low/out of fuel they seem to have no issues.

This is a problem with modern diesel fuel and injection pumps not specific to jeep/ram/stellanis products.

You could have a 3.0L duramax with a belt driven oil pump that requires the transmission removed to replace.

As time goes on this particular failure wont be a huge deal as pumps and injectors will be available.

Suppposedly running b20 or biodiesel helps lubricity.

I too am having issues with my 2021 Gladiator Ecodiesel. I have had nothing but diesels since 1998: VW(3), GMC Duramax, Ford Powerstroke 7.3(2), Audi Q7(2), Ram Cummins 6.4, and now this Ecodiesel.

I have not had any issues with any previous diesel.

I was driving down the intestate towing a small single axle utility trailer that was empty. Check engine light comes on and lose power immediately; no response to throttle. I pull over, but before I can come to a complete stop the transmission throws itself into park and engine dies. I try to restart, but jeep starts shaking violently like it is trying to start with transmission still in gear. Hitting the start button again does nothing and jeep is still trying to start, shaking violently. Left side of trailer is still in the right lane and here come the semis. I am praying that one doesn't hit the trailer. So I want to put in neutral to push my gladiator more so the trailer will be out of the lane. Wont go in neutral. I google the issue and discover you have to remove a cover and pull a cord to manually put the transmission in neutral. In the meantime more semis are passing awfully close. Transmission shifter is electronic. You could have buttons, rotary knob, toggle switch, etc, the shifter is just for looks. Not being able to shift into neutral seems like a safety issue. In my panic i did not think to shift the transfer case into neutral.

Finally moved it well over to the side i call for a tow truck and was told it would be 1.5 hours. Just crazy. I am afraid to hit the start button again. So, now I have plenty of time to google the issue. Warning on the dash states: Service electronic throttle. Could not find much. Now 45 minutes later I thought to try starting again. Fires right up and idles smoothly. I release the cord for neutral and put it in gear, still all ok. I am 2 miles from an exit so drive with flashers on in emergency lane keeping speed below 45. I finally get home.....time to change the underwear!!

Dealer says they can't get me in for a month. What?? They said I can just drop it off there until they can get to it. I need to tow trailers for a living(not heavy)and they won't give a loaner until it has been diagnosed . My bicycle won't tow trailers. So, what to do. I keep driving without trailers, all is fine. Check engine resets after so many cycles and no more issues...... until, I tow another trailer, 5x8 enclosed with just a mattress in it. Very light. Pull over again well off the road. Wait 5 minutes and restart and drive slower to my destination. I was towing both times with cruise control on and now don't use cruise while towing.

Finally get it in to the dealer, they have it back out in 15 minutes. they said they just needed to flash the computer. Had to wait a dang month for that?!?! I wish the Jeep had a reset button!!

Been towing fine for a few months even with a 6000 lb trailer and then the same warning comes back on, this time not towing at all, just waiting in line to drop of may son at school. It still drives, but with limited power. I am afraid to tow at this point. Dealer appointment....1.5 months away!!

I call Chrysler to tell them of the issue and they say they are affected by Covid. Dealer has one Diesel tech. Chrysler says call another dealer. I do that and they say they are not taking any new customers. I can't get a loaner and (previously when I had my Ram Cummins) when I do they give some little car. I tell them I need a truck because I need to tow trailers and they say not their issue. Now I can't work.

Just on a side note....My wife's Audi Q7 diesel is a freight train....amazing. It will out tow my gladiator. when we take the Audi in for service, they give us an identical loaner and offer us a cappuccino. The Audi cost us less than the Gladiator. So, how can Audi provide that level of service, but Jeep can't?????

Hoping this next time the gladiator will be fixed. I love driving it, I love the diesel, but don't like the repeating issue. Ecodiesel has been in Chrysler products for many years, they should be able to handle any issues. In Europe that engine is in delivery trucks and maseratis.....millions of miles....there should be a solution.

I think I will call Jeep Cares as others have said and see how they can help me.
Bummer your having so many issue's we love our's we have 3 to Jt's and a Jl Rubi all diesels absolutely 0 problems even tow a 16 foot camper over I 70 in Colorado. Maybe you just got a bad we have close to 50k miles on ours so far and can't complain 1 bit my wife get 30 + mpg in her Tuscadero Jl Rubi diesel! Hope they take care of the issue for you this time good luck!

I have a 2021 wrangler diesel. It’s less than a year old and has only 23,000 miles on it. It’s been down for almost 2 months now. The dealers and the auto group that owns the dealership refused to help me out; other than working on it because it’s under warranty. Because of the price of gas; I asked jeep wave to pay my payments that it has been down. They said no and made up some B.S. comparing it to a Dr getting sued if his car broke down. I am trying to get jeep to buy it back from me at MSRP or give me an even Steven swap for a equally priced Ram truck that costs what my jeep costed me. I told them that I am driving my 2004 F150 that has never broken down and how I bought the jeep because I wanted the mpg. On the highway I was getting around 29-31; now I’m getting 17. I had a jeep before this and it never gave me problems.
I went to the dealership today and they said they are still waiting on parts and that there were 5 other vehicles sitting there with the same problem.

Sorry, you aren't likely to get full money back, you got 23,000 miles use out of it! They have zero obligation to buy it at MSRP, not a lick of obligation.
You are asking for more than they are obligated to do under any law.
It's unfair to even ask that.
You'll never get very far with unreal expectations and the anger showing through.
Look up lemon laws and reality.
You've gotten thousands of miles of use out of it and you want full MSRP or a new RAM price out of it?

It’s the point that they are refusing to say it’s a problem when there are 4 vehicles with the same problem, and the brand new charger that was there when mine went to the dealership to get fixed was still sitting there next to mine. They should have taken all the jeeps with that fuel system off the line or did a massive recall. I read that they did a recall for prior years, but it’s clear that the problem still exists.

The cp4 pump and it’s cam slope is fairly aggressive to generate the fuel pressures required for the 3.0

Within the pump the way the roller floats on the cam without a pin appears to turn horizontal, then stays there and totals the pump filling the fuel system and injectors full of metal shavings.

I did read the later versions of the pump in the 21+ have changed the cam within the pump reducing the chance of this happening… but it still does.

I’ve followed every post on failing fuel pumps, and am unhealthily obsessed with it.

I have not seen a single fuel pump failure for folks running a fuel lubricant like hot shots….

Bosch is the manufacturer of the CP4 (not jeep).

FYI 26000 miles on my 21’ JTRD… Moab trips, lots of towing my 3300lb camper up hills, etc.

never a breakdown… never a check engine light.

I do a few ‘diesel’ related things with my jeep.

1. 3-4oz of hotshots per tank. Always.
2. Quality Shell fuel. No cheap or old fuel station diesel.
3. I let it warm up for 2-3 min before touching the throttle.
4. Oil changes every 5k
5. I clean the air filter every oil change and replace every 10k
6. Fuel filter every 15k

I hope my experience is different than those with failing pumps…. But if mine fails, I rest assured I do have a 100k warranty.

The battery issue is most certainly a jeep design issue. The dual battery system is awful…..

Uh, Volvo, Chevy Malibu (as of 8 years ago anyway), certain Mercedes, and several others. It's not a Jeep design by any stretch, and it's been around a while, likely longer than Jeep has used it.

I do wonder the failure rate between brands / batteries used….

It might just be Jeep's implementation of the design - seems to have worked out for some of the others.

But it's hard to argue with your comment, too LOL

So you came on here to whine to us about your problems and how no one will do what you want?

I’ve not had an issue either and I’m of the opinion that if you’re somewhat astute you can see the battery failure coming at least a little in advance. However, it can be very much so frustrating.

I just got my diesel Gladiator back after a new engine at 23,000 miles. Which took 4 months . . . it is a long story, but related to this specific question I have direct recent experience w/ both Jeep Cares and consulting w/ lemon law lawyers. Basically, CA law says if they buy it back they will compensate you for the purchase price (what you paid, not sticker), including fees, tax, etc. BUT, they deduct a mileage fee, which is equal to the percentage of 120,000 miles driven. Which in my case would have been about 20%. This is California law if you pursue an official lemon claim.

Cares presented 3 options, first was fix it and see if I was happy with the result and then they would offer some compensation. Second was find me another vehicle, third was a buyback under the terms I described above.

At first, the new engine was slated to be delivered in October, so would have been in the shop 5 months before they even started to repair. I had written a long letter to Cares describing my frustration and my intent to sue via a lemon law attorney. Either due to that or some random coincidence, the engine arrived 6 weeks early.

In the end, I believe the combination of a new engine and some compensation turned out to be a better option for me. Yes, I could have taken a buy back and had a new vehicle, but it would have been at a significant cost to me. Balanced of course against the frustration and time out of service.

Couple things I learned . . . if the situation is not looking good write a letter and immediately call Jeep Cares. If you aren't getting good service (which is likely at the first level) escalate to Customer Retention. Get everything in writing, don't trust anything verbal (I know, obvious but . . . ). Research lemon laws in your state so you know exactly what to expect. Also, if you are thinking of a buyback or lemon law, do it right away, there's no benefit in waiting. The process takes several months.

Overall I've been mostly happy with Cares and my dealer. The supply line and labor issues are very real, shops are just stupidly backed up, it is frustrating for everyone. But still love the truck and so far wouldn't change.

PS - no idea why the engine failed, it kept breaking belts, they found metal in the oil and decided it needed to be replaced. No other symptoms, no noises, oil changed regularly, no mods at all.

VERY well said, very logical and level-headed. Good job, and IMO, good choice.
