I recently had the maintenance, esc, and etc warning lights come on while driving around the city, putting my Jeep into limp mode. Thought it may have been due to running low on fuel since they lit up shortly after refueling. Took it into my local Jeep dealership for a diagnostics test and they’re saying I need a new EGR valve and intake manifold.
After reading some threads and google searches I can understand the EGR valve issue, but with only 28K miles on it seems like that’s way lower than normal to have the intake manifold replaced.
Any suggestions on if I should challenge the dealership on that?
Interestingly the service guy said the egr was covered by my extended warranty, but didn’t say anything about the intake manifold being covered by warranty.
I suspect they’re going try to make me pay for that even though the five-year 60,000 mile warranty should still apply from what I’ve read. I did run a Thorton diesel tuning chip for a while and the dealership may know that from my last oil change in October, but took it out a while back.
Appreciate any tips or advice.

May be a swirl valve problem for the intake, 28k miles shouldn’t be enough for it to be full of crud.

You can ask for advice on here and you'll get different answers from everyone, none of us are the ones who looked at your truck to determine whats wrong, so no one here can say why the manifold needs replacing. Asking them to explain why something needs to be replaced isn't challenging them and should be something you do anyways.

1. Ask why the manifold needs replacing.
2. Ask if it will be covered under the warranty.
3. If they say it isn't covered, ask if the issue with the manifold is because of the EGR. If it is, ask again why it's not covered under warranty if it was caused by a warrantied item.
4. If they still say it won't be covered by warranty, ask if theres something that can be done, because if it weren't for the EGR thats still under warranty because it's known to have issues, you wouldn't need to be replacing the manifold.

In my experience, if something doesn't make sense, and you show them in a respectful manner that it doesn't make sense, they will often times work with you on it. I've had dealerships ranging from Toyota to BMW agree to cover some cost for service work.

Diesels have a 5year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty that covers the intake manifolds. You shouldn't have to use an extended warranty which depending on your warranty may be the reason they are saying the intake is not covered under that but it is 100% covered under the Powertrain Warranty. The EGR is the one that is only covered for the Federal Emissions 2 year 24months or the 3 year 36,000 mile warranties.

I have a 2021 diesel gladiator that needed the same work done at 49,000 miles. Brought it to the stealership and they did the work under my warranty took them three months.

It went out nine months later and had to be replaced again. This time I took it to a different stealership. They claimed that there’s two ways of doing this repair one with the cab on and one with the cab off. They said if you leave the cab on you cannot reach the bolt’s correctly and this is why the first repair failed. Not sure if all that’s true or not. The warranty is out the second dealership covered it because it had only been nine months since the first repair. Still took them three months to do the work again this time and I could never get anyone on the phone. I have to go in person with my bitchy self.

And yeah, they try to get you on everything told me that since they were aftermarket sidesteps that bolt the same exact place as the originals it would be $500 extra for them to take them off to do the repair. I love my Jeep but I hate the dealerships.

good luck.
