My friend who lives in Ottawa, and works for the government, had his JL stolen last year and this is what his contacts told him.

Makes sense - It does seem to be a hot area.

The hotel isn't sharing the video with me yet, police apparently need to request it. No idea how they got it. Ottawa is a hot spot for vehicle theft lately, the Jeep is likely in a container in Montreal now.

For sure. By the time "officials" (including hotel officials) react, the bad guys have made their getaway and have had more than enough time for even the most inept crooks to hide the thing away.
It's never good but even worse when you are far from home dealing with people in another area, the red tape, the time, the BS you have to go through. Heck, you can't even leave and continue on anywhere.

How about an Air Tag to find it.

Won't work unless there's open air to an iPhone within long range bluetooth to the vehicle.
And he would have had to put them in before it was stolen.

They can work - but aren't perfect unless you are clever because I can find them with any phone if I'm a thief. So you must hide them well and disable the speaker so they can't be made to beep or make a sound.
If it's in a shipping container, no hope.
A bit late in this case.

Like Bill said, plus it would have to have a cellular data connection.
Any thief could easily hide a Jeep in or next to my shop and it would never be found even WITH a subscription to Guardian services because there's no cell service there.
Once it's in a dead zone, or surrounded by metal building or whatever, it can't be found.
I could park our Jeeps by my shop and the app won't be able to find them. In fact, when it does see them if parked out front, it gives the wrong address. At other times it's spot on down to the exact parking spot if in town.

So if I wake up and see 3 or 4 Gladiators parked down by my shop, I'll know this post has been read by the wrong people.
