The Gen 3 produces more heat and pressure compared to the Gen 2 engine. You can literally run Rotella T6 in the Gen 2 engine for 20,000 miles and still have good UOA results. The Gen 3, on the other hand, shears oils quickly which is more evidence of extreme heat and pressure.
Higher boost, compression etc? They're both water and oil cooled turbo. Oil blow by can't be that much different between the two.

It could be the overall design or it could be the turbo itself. The Gen 3 is 80% different from the Gen 2, so that's a lot of changes. There's a bigger turbo, wider bearings, redesigned journals, different emissions, etc. We know for sure the turbo is cooking the oil.

The Gen 3 uses low tension piston rings which causes blow by. The Gen 2 doesn't burn a drop of oil. I have a lot of oil consumption when towing on the Gen 3.

Been running the QS since new and 50k miles, I'm gonna disconnect the charge pipe and run a borescope down to inspect the turbo before switching to VPB for the next 3 OC then reinspect the turbo.

The EcoDiesel community will appreciate anything you can document.

There was a guy on one of the social media groups that posted this image. He didn't reply to any of the questions. All we know is that he had deposits in the turbo resonator tube. He said he was running Amsoil, but he didn't say when he switched over or which Amsoil he was running.

It's a good oil for the Cummins and 2nd gen EcoDiesel, but I wouldn't run it in my Gen 3 EcoDiesel. We've seen the turbo that was taken off a Gen 3 test mule with a CK-4 oil. The deposits were a big enough concern for Stellantis to change the oil specification and send memos and a video to the service departments letting them know the concern.

so is Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic Motor Oil SAE 5W-40 (low saps oil) a better choice then valvoline blue?

Does the bottle have MS-12991 written on the back of it?

That's a great question and one that I really can't answer. At one point in time, Valvoline Full Synthetic European Vehicle 5W-40 met the MS-12991 certification, but they reformulated it and it no longer meets the specification. As of 2021, a Valvoline representative said that they didn't have any oils that met the MS-12991 designation. If that has changed, please let me know. It's difficult to keep up with all the changes from the various manufacturers.

Yes, you're looking at a factory turbo that came off an EcoDiesel test mule. The compressor outlet temps must be super-hot.

You don't owe me anything. We appreciate anything you can provide, but there's no urgency.
