That's low-lift mode, where the follower is on the rollers.
The damage is always the high lift part of the cam and follower.

That's what I find interesting - people say they hear the tick, and at under 3,000 RPM and yet all cam damage is in the high lift area, above 3,000 RPM where the engine doesn't spend all that much time.
With our hills here, i spend a lot of time over 3,000 RPM, especially with any wind, while towing and so on.

Gotta spend some more time playing what-if with pictures and so on to try to see what is going on that it ticks on low lift, but destroys the high lift.
is this why oil pressure spikes above 3000RPM?

I've got a 2020 gladiator with roughly 90,000 mi. Took delivery July 1st 2019, I hear valve noise from time to time. Mostly when the engine is lugging. I have heard what sounded like maybe a stuck lifter? Low RPM, very loud tick. But it has since gone away, any thoughts?

That is the problem with the dealership/corporate warranty repair model. Just fix what you see and move on.

There has never been a one size fits all model addressing root cause of the Pentastar valvetrain failures. That leads me to believe there is multiple single issues that contribute but not everybody will have the same single issue as the next person. FCA I am sure has the data and knows but rather than implement meaningful corrective action that sticks, they rather play the game of attrition through warranty arbitrage.
To paraphrase Mr. Durden:

They have to apply the formula: expected failure rate times size of fleet times cost to repair vs average settlement cost. If a*b*c is less than settlement cost, it doesn't get fixed.

I've got two 3.6 motors out of warranty, one of which has the warrantee repair at 29k, wish me luck.

First post here.

I have a 2020 Gladiator Sport with 40k miles and I'm curious if there has been any consensus on how to avoid the dreaded tick? My 2015 JKU had it at 90k miles and if I can do any maintenance or anything now to prevent this $2k-4k repair, I'd like to know.

From everything I’ve read, you can’t really avoid it. It’s just going to happen on some of them.

What @yoda13 said. There has never been a one size fits all approach known to mitigate it. Best you can do is just keep up on the oil and filter changes.

Has anybody ever considered a correlation study pertaining to which manufacturing facility has produced the majority of PUGs with the tick?

I think in relation to Wrangler and Gladiator production, they all have been made in Mexico.

There's a secondary pump that kick in at 3k. So cam, plus more pumpage.
No, there is not a secondary pump. It's all the same chain drive oil pump, just variable volume.
Too much guessing and misinformation out there.

Same pump but more oil pressure adjusted by a solenoid in the pump.
The volume changes................ it's a variable volume pump.
They regulate the pressure accordingly by varying the volume of the pump (pretty much continuously)
The oil pump has seven vanes and a moving element that continuously adjusts to maintain a regulated oil pressure supply by varying the displacement of the pump.
There are 2 regulated pressure stages of operation controlled by an on/off solenoid. Low pressure mode regulation (solenoid on) is approximately 29 psi and high pressure mode regulation (solenoid off) is approximately 65 psi (you may see higher, in the 70s, for example).
The PCM switches the pump between stages based on engine operating conditions, oil and coolant temperatures, speed and load.
Under most conditions under 3,000 RPM the pump will run in low mode and switch from low to high mode 3,000 RPM and greater.
The maximum oil pressure in the engine is limited to 145 psi by the relief valve to prevent damage.

I noted on a 2024 Mojave X window sticker it said engine was USA, which surprised me a lot.

I just got a tick in the last month and its getting worse. I hear it at slower speeds and the sound goes away sometimes. Yesterday I hit a bump in the road and it went away for a couple seconds then came back. Any thoughts? 2020 LE with 52k on motor

Are you getting any warning lights with this ?

I have a new 2023 Gladiator Willys since April. A couple of weeks ago the issue started with the ticking sound. I'm now at 19000 km.
Mostly noticeable in 2nd gear and higher rpms above 2000. Once in 5th gear I cannot hear it anymore.
I had an oil change done this week and asked the garage to check the sound.
They said it is a known problem according to the information in the thread. I have an appointment by the end of the month and they will do an engine teardown to get to the issue.

Hi fellow BCer!

Should be under warranty since its a 2023. Not sure if I misunderstood your sentence there but I assume you are taking it to the dealer right?

This sounds exactly like a typical ticking right-side intake cam to me. If you are bringing it to a shop ask them to put a stethoscope on the right side valve cover and it should be apparent without taking it apart.

I have what I assume is the same problem, will be doing the work myself this weekend since the dealer wasn't willing to warranty my truck and I don't have the time to argue with them and be without my truck for weeks.
