What are the options for a non daily driver but not off road exclusive JT in the 38-40” size range. Have 37’s Ridgegrapplers currently but want to change wheels so new tires seems easiest way to go and sell my takeoffs complete.

First, good luck finding any in stock. I did the search based on a 17" wheel, different size would probably yield different results. I believe at a 40" tire a 20" wheel opens up more choices.

38's are Nitto and Milestar and a whole bunch of unknown brands.

40's opens the door, Nitto, Milestar, Cooper, Toyo, Yokohama, Pro Comp, Mickey Thompson, Good Year.

I've had Pro Comp and Good Year in the past. Wouldn't recommend either to anyone. Pro Comps are heavy and a rough ride, unless they've improved them. Good Year Wranglers have a hard time clearing mud or snow.

Running Toyo RT 35's right now and like them. Quiet for what they are, smooth ride, don't track too bad on pavement seams or cracks or seam sealer.

I've had Yokohama performance tires on a completely different style vehicle and liked them and might give them a try when I step up.

damn, you weren’t kidding. Nothing in 38-40” is available anywhere ive looked. Most are 5 weeks out. I would consider both 17” and 20” wheels since I’m buying new anyways.

What’s the overall mounted height of your 38” ridgegrapplers. Seems Nitto is a bit optimistic at least in my experience. My 37-12.5 ridgegrapplers measured out at 35.5” installed. How damn hard is it to make a tire in the stated size??

The outside diameter changes based on the pressure you use, but especially changes when the vehicles weight compresses it.

In a 17” wheel, you have Nitto or Patagonia 38s, BFG 39s, and a bunch of 40s. There is a national shortage on all of them. One 40 I’ve seen readily available, but have no experience with, is the Maxxis RAZR.

I run the ms Patagonia. Not by choice but because every other 40” was backordered back in August and I didn’t want to wait that long for my build.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Low noise, good ride, minimal wear in 15k miles. Comfortable at 75mph on interstate with cruise set. Decent in snow, crappy on ice, aired down does average or a little better in mud/rocks.
They recommend to run at higher air pressure with a crown in the middle, driving on the center 2/3 where the siping is for on road. Then air down for off road. Crazy but it works. Rotate every 3k for best results but I’m stretching closer to 5k.

+1 for milestar. I’ve had my 38” Patagonias for a few months now and I absolutely love them. I’ve ran Nittos in the past before and these blow them away. They ride great, they’re pretty quiet, and they haven’t been wearing too much. Plus, I see a lot of the off-road YouTubers running them so they must be good!

I just switched from 37" Patagonias to 40" Trail Grapplers. Put about 11k miles on the Patagonia. They definitely require more air pressure to keep their crowned shape but performed well and rode good.

Ordered Trail Grapplers from Northridge at the end of April backorder estimated 120 days. Only took 8 weeks to ship. These Nittos are much heavier than the Pat's I was running though.
