This ZF trans is used in lots of luxury cars. Do you think they have this same clunk issue? No Bentley owner will put up with this trans issue. I can't believe that we are all told this is normal. Are we all just sheep? We all have to play games with the trans.
We are blaming the transmission and ignoring all of the other differences -
driveshafts, u-joints, carrier bearings, backlash in the differential, sound transmission through the various components, we have a transfer case all motion has to go through that those cars do not, and perhaps even differences in the transmissions themselves (design differences)

It's the trans for sure. Only does it once after sitting. If it was other things it would do it all the time in D and R. Just like the cams, Jeep knows what it is . Jeep just hopes we mod enough to void the warranty.

Any chance this thread ever gets back on topic. LOL

Being it is about the V8 Gladiator.
I get alerts multiple times a day with nothing at all being posted about the Hemi v8 going into a Gladiator.

They can keep them 4 bangers, hybrids all that crap.
I am only interested in Gladiator if they ever put a v8 in it. lol

Of course its the transmission. Mine does it into drive or reverse, only if I start it and immediately try to throw it into gear before it's had time to come off it's 1500 RPM cold start idle - because at that RPM it's spinning the torque converter (and the trans internals) fast enough that when you go into Drive or Reverse, it has to slow down pretty abruptly because the driveshaft isn't moving (bang).

If I start the truck and give it a moment to idle down to 1,000 RPM or below - no noticeable clunk into gear, because the converter can absorb the impact at lower RPM.

But also - I just don't care.

I also don't care about the cam debacle. If it eats one - whatever. I'll fix it.

My Camaro is just as likely to eat an oil pump or drop a lifter.

My buddies Duramax Denali is just as likely to eat a high pressure injection pump.

And if they put Hemi's in these things, they are gonna put poorly cast exhaust manifolds on them that crack and you or the dealer will spend all weekend taking the truck apart putting $1,500 worth of new manifolds in it. That's if lifters and/or cam doesn't fail, because that's a Hemi thing too...

Etc. 😂

You'll be waiting for a few years on that alert............. there's nothing related to a factory V8 to discuss. It ain't happening this year or next. Maybe put the alerts on pause.

Why have we not had such a thing happen? It must not be something that's a big deal or leads to catastrophic damage, at least not in most cases.
Ours have been just as quiet, if not more quiet, than the transmissions in my other trucks.

And then we have the old conspiracy theory where Jeep hopes we mod things enough to void a warranty. Sorry, most Jeeps don't get modified that much. Look around on the highways around here - mostly stock, maybe some tire changes, small lifts, but certainly not enough get modified for it to make any difference to FCA on warranties, no benefit to them.

I’ve had s ‘24 JT and now have a ‘25. There’s an occasional hiccup when accelerating in second or third, like all six cylinders skipped in unison, but neither of my trans clunked. I traded out of a 2017 F150 FX4 5.0 6 speed auto that was arguably my favorite vehicle of all time, but I love this 8 speed ZF “smart transmission” a lot.

The vast majority of the ZF 8 speed trans are just fine but sadly that's not true for all of them. If your ZF is working perfectly be thankful . When the 392 is in the JT there will also be a HD trans with it along with a full time transfer case. .

IF the 392 is ever in the JT there will also be a HD trans with it along with a full time transfer case. .
The transmission will be the same torque range as the 4xe, and the same transfer case for that reason.
I'd not imply that the current transmission is "light duty" - just that the other is rated for higher torque.

Eh. I have no idea what y'all are talking about. Mine has never been clunky. But... I don't leap in, and immediately throw it in drive after starting it up. I always give it a good 20-30 seconds of idle time before putting it in gear, and once in drive it shifts so smoothly you can't even feel the shifts most of the time. So far at least, it's been the smoothest shifting transmission I've ever had.

With 8 gears the RPM difference between gears is less. To fit all 8 gears into the case they have to be cut very thin,,,, LLOL.
