Torybilt - I guess I'm not really concerned for myself (and Virginia doesn't appear to care) - but more surprised as far as it being allowed for Jeep to put it there. do any other pickups have it on the tailgate - which does make sense for 98% of the time a truck is being used - like if it was up on back of cab like many pickups it would be blocked by a bed topper.

But thanks for looking up Virginia anyhow.

Jeep said that they were the first to integrate the brake light into the gate. Other trucks have it on the cab, but with the removable top that isn’t a viable option for the Gladiator.

And I can guarantee you it will be well received.
I disagree, because I hate the idea (no offense)! As someone that has driven trucks all my life, I can tell you that the top edge of the bed and tailgate are one of those areas that are always getting dinged. I don't want a delicate thing such as a plastic light lens or a camera where it is subject to being crunched. In recent years manufacturers have been putting tough plastic rail caps on top of the bed and tailgate as a bit of protection for that area. Prior to that, they aftermarket supplied diamond tread rail caps.

I hear ya. But this is exactly why I had suggested that they make the camera countersunk so the lens would never get hit or scratched by anything laying on top of the tailgate. Make it at least one half of an inch below the top of the tailgate. They could do the same thing with a third brake light, countersink it for the same reason.

Maybe this was already suggested, but what if the 3rd brakelight was countersunk right into the top and front of the tailgate. Then when it was folded down, it would still shine on the ground, and out the "top" of the tailgate, which would now be pointed out the back of the truck.

Sorry if this has already been suggested.

Unless you are speeding or trying to piss off the cop are they really going to stop you? Doubtful. While this is a good thread read I doubt this applies to most. However, I am one of those drivers who arent afraid to pass a cop just because they are purposely doing 5mph under the speed limit. They are just like every one one of us. Unless its quota time most are just riding out the day hoping crap doesnt blow up 10 minutes before they get off.

I just have to ask.... have any of you been pulled over because your third brake light wasnt showing? If so they had to be fresh out the academy

Actually, with the current 3rd brakelight, if the red lense protruded slightly, when it was folded down, it would stick out, and still shine backward. I'm not worried about it.

no, but around here, they don't have much to do except dui stops and handing out baseball cards. =p

friends and I have been pulled over for vehicle being lowered, or raised too much (discretion of the officer), no front plate (a lot), loud exhaust, bumper light, marker light, head light or tail light out (with exception of 3rd brake light, have not heard of that yet).

Sorry, should have gone back and edited my post i guess.

Honestly i'm just bored, normally i wouldn't give a crap about a 3rd, but i just need a daily dose of Gladiator, until the pricing comes out.

I don't know why I read the entire 3rd brake light thread. Let's talk about more important things like.... will 40's fit without a lift as long as I don't drive over any bumps or make left/right turns? This question is definitely more important. LOL

It’s in the gate because they assume the tops are coming off way more often than gate will be down.

Ram also offers a secondary camera on back of cab near third brake light but again that would be removed with top. My Ram 3500 had camera in tailgate and so does my Tacoma. So camera placement is normal for trucks big or small across many manufacturers. Great view for hooking trailers.

Jeep got it right.

Don't forget a huge percentage of JTs won't even have a solid top to mount a CHMSL on...
