After many weeks of research, people’s opinions and experiences with regearing to 4:56 and/or 4:88’s on 35’s is still unclear to me which gear would be the proper choice for best overall performance and MPG (if possible) for a daily driver.. I have a 30 minute highway commute to and from work 5 times a week. Limited after market accessories on my JT aside from larger tires and heavier wheels. 2” inch lift. I figured I’d start a poll to get a more visual response.

Following. I’m about to do this exact same thing. From months of research and quotes from a half dozen shops- 4.88 is the way to go, especially if you ever think you may run 37s.

This is where I still contemplate 4.56… I don’t load my jeep (ever.) Family of four with kids being 11/7. Heaviest load I haul is maybe 200# camping gear. Hardly ever tow anything, If I do it’s a 12’ open landscape trailer. Don’t wheel (this) jeep.. ever. Live at sea level and don’t need to climb anything.

It’s that part that makes me wonder if 4.56 is better suited for what I want and I could still be “ok” at 37s under these conditions. When you don’t do the “normal” stuff (carry a load/wheel/tow/climb) I contemplate if the answer changes.

Honestly have no idea. That’s why we have this forum.

If you will never go to 37s then 4.56 is perfect. If 37s are a possibility then 4.88.

Exaclty, you and I live similar lifestyles (except no kids lol). I tow a pontoon boat twice a year, taking the boat out of the water for the winter and back in for the summer. I don’t plan on going to 37’s, so I wanted to start this thread specifically for people who are running 35’s and torn on which gear to go to. I don’t want to over gear and I heard 4:88’s on 35’s is a bit overkill.

I did 4.88. Don't regret it one bit. I wheel a lot and live about 6,000 feet. Plus it does give me 37 potential if I decide to go crazy and upgrade steering knuckles and the like.

I feel the same as @DocMike , although I went with 4.56. He lives at altitude, I do not.

I tend to travel up to Ohio every Halloween timeframe to hunt on buddies farm. Last year I had the same set up as my signature but running 3.73's... was in 6th gear coming and going.

This year I had 4.56 and 8th gear is per the norm now after 45mph.

I travel the speed limit and with cruise on practically the whole trip.

Some things I noticed about the trip, the milage is almost exactly doubled, the temps are about the same, the distance was very close as well and...not sure about the difference in time running, but it could be due to traffic, idle, etc.

THe mpg was little better though....

Do you travel highway at all? I’m on 3.73’s with 35’s and I’m getting about 18.5mpg combined. It seems like most people who haven’t regeared have worst MPG than me before the swap. Maybe my situation isn’t as bad as I think, lol!

When stock I never saw over 19mpg. I dont speed and I use cruse most of the time. Most places I run down here the min speed limit is 65mph, unless Im in town.

If I run 55-60 mph I'm around the lower 19mpgs for Ive seen it a time or two. Of course...all it will will take is a minute head wind and that will turn everything to chit, lol.

You seem to be getting pretty dang good mpg "my opinion" with current set up...I couldn't stand never getting in a gear higher than 6th unless I was heading down an overpass, mountain or letting off the gas to coast to a stop...then and only then would I ever see 7th.

The only issue is really 7th and 8th on the highway. I hit 8th quite frequently but the slightest incline I drop to 7th. The Rpm’s drop harshly, when going from 8th to 7th. Here is the RPM’si” in 8th at 68mph

4.56 would be better for highway mileage IMHO.
4.88 gives a snappy throttle response off the line.
I may have taken a 1st gen miata to task at a stoplight recently. Maybe.
I would HIGHLY recommend driving each if you can and see what you like.
I love my 4.88 as I am mostly around town. I can pull into traffic with ease and when I wheel, I have loads of control. I see 18-19 after a long highway trip in the mountains.

Mods are expensive. We all have limited funds.
I spent good money on gears and a full kit with a lifetime warranty.
I use those gears every day...even though you cannot see them. It's not a cool light bar or a winch.
Order of things I really use.

Gearing
Holster
GMRS
ARB Twin (I love airing up and down)
KC lights
Winch (used twice)
recovery boards (not once)

This is the thing Ive never understood. I always bring up @Jeeperjamie cause in my eyes he has unicorn for his mpg have always been great. Im beginning to wonder if I got a Turd instead. I never saw 8th with 35's and only saw 7th when mentioned above, when stock I never saw 19mpg but once and that was the first tank I ran through it. It was honestly around 17 mpgs most of the time. Ive mentioned this a thousand times on this forum and Ill do it again for 1001 time, my brother has a gladiator the same as mine except his is silver. He got 22 mpg stock all the time in it and we ride the same roads...but I couldn't break 17.

Seems with lift, tires and gearing Im back to normal??? LOL

I traded a diesel canyon on this Jeep and even though I love it dearly I miss the diesel...

Hmm i wonder if your MPG has something to do with your terrain.on stock overland I was at 21.5 mpg. Dropped to 18.2, with tires and lift.

Too much boudin and gumbo in ya stomach probably. At least that’s my issue when I drive through Lafayette to see my family in New Orleans and Baton Rouge ?

Completely agree. Isn’t even a debate for me on do it vs do not re gear. Just want to make sure when I do it, I pick the absolute best possible range.

The wild card for me is 37s. When my 35s wear out I’d like 37s purely for the look. Hoping since my new Baja boss say that last around 60k miles I’ll change my mind by then. Weight, cost, daily driver, commuter, wear and tear all say DONT get 37s. But me…
