I have been searching through many threads looking specifically for folks running 40's with -18mm offset on the wheels on a non-Rubicon or Mojave. My JT is an Overland, so it doesn't have the same axle width as the Rubicon/Mojave.

Current setup:
  • 3.5" Metalcloak Game-Changer lift
  • Metalcloak Overland Tube Fenders (Front & Rear)
  • Metalcloak Hi-Clearance Inner Fenders
  • Fuel Zypher Beadlocks 17x9 -38mm offset
  • Falken Wildpeak M/T 38's (fully worn and ready to be replaced)

On my current setup the 38"s with the -38mm offset on the wheels completely clear without any rubbing at full-lock or max articulation. I got a good deal on a set of Cooper STT Pro 40 x 13.50 x 17's, but still looking at the many wheel choices before I make the call on a set.

I want to stay with a 17" wheel, are so far probably like the Black Rhino Armory in Gun Black the best.

If you are running 40's on your non-Rubicon or Mojave and have -18mm offset on your wheels, please drop a reply about how they fit, what wheel, any rubbing and/or mods you had to do to get them to fit. I would greatly appreciate any replies!

I’m running same setup as yours but with rubicon width axles -10 offset and 40” Baja boss.

Good deal, thanks for the reply. I guess the question is does the additional -8mm of offset make up for the 1.5” narrower axle width. How do they clear with your setup?

Mine before on the narrow width axles would rub the inner fenders when it would articulate. I had 40” maxxis razers then on the -12 offset. With the rubicon width axles I haven’t rubbed them since. On the sport axles if it were mine I’d stick with the wheels you have if you are wanting to go to 40s.

I’m literally in the same boat as you and trying to determine backspacing and/or a wide front axle for 40s. I’m going to lurk your thread to see what I can glean. Thanks for starting it.

BTW… how did you like the Falken MT’s?

What part of GA? I was in Atlanta metro for 20 years and back there often for work.

I’ve pretty much been searching threads all of today - hope the replies help you out as well.

Fuel has a couple of decent options in -38mm, specifically the Slayer and Oxide.

Custom Offsets is has some good search filter’s to narrow it down as well -

The Falken MT’s were great. They were on the JT when I bought it, and have put about ~25,000 miles on them since I have had it. First time with Falken tires, I would have considered them again if they still made a 40 MT.

I’m in Cumming, just north of Alpharetta off of Hwy 400.

stick with the -38 if you wanna run 40s on sport axles

before you make the swap you should pay close attention to your unit bearings, ball joints and steering. -38 is really hard on all of them

It unfortunately is not comparable. Negative offset adds width but it also adds scrub radius. Higher scrub radius means your tires will reach further forward and backwards at lock and might rub the body which is what it sounds like they dealt with before.

If they were rubbing at -12mm then you will be rubbing even harder at -38mm.

Thanks for the clarification, wasn’t sure if they were or not.

How are you liking those Maxxis tires? Been looking at them for a while, would you recommend them?

The Maxxis tires did pretty good. I have since swapped to the Baja boss m/t.
