So there’s a gladiator for sale near me that I’ve been stalking. It has all the options I kinda need but has the small display and I assume the crappy speakers. I’m not a big radio guy but I’m wondering if anyone else has less expensive sound system and if it’s sufficient

Depends on your expectations. My Buddy has the 7" radio in his JTR and is generally happy with it. He's an old retired guy that mostly listens to classic radio on Sirius.

My JTR has the 8.4 with the premium sound and I see no reason to swap it out. Mk JK has a Chinese Android radio with the 10.1" screen. Sounds decent but the selling point to me was the large display.

Hey,
I recently purchased a Mojave 23 with alpine premium audio. I can’t help you with what the standard setup is but I’m like you and I’ve never been a big radio guy. I wanted to share with you what I noticed driving around. I assumed with the doors and top off that the music would be nonexistent but I was extremely impressed with the speakers and setup. Crystal clear, loud with bass, it’s nice. I’m sure there are people on here that would call us a couple noobs but Something to think about. Good luck

Ill second @Ricky with the sound being surprisingly good, even with the doors and top off. I have official US Army issued %80 hearing loss in my right ear..and i can hear the premium sound system pretty dang good on my bad ear side without turning the sound level above 18-20. Which is less than half way up.

Sooo my .02

I have a loaded out 23 Mojave with 8.4.

I put the tesla tablet screen in amd up graded all speakers with MB Quart (top dash, knees and overhead).

Added a kicker 10” powered sub.

The big screen was fun but as stated on here there are issues with them. Its hard to hear phone calls and I gound myself just turning the radio off and hsing the speaker on my phone. Tons of options with it though as it is a tablet..soo you can customize it forever.

Fast forward about 5 months and as it has started to get colder temperature…the screen started lagging and not turning on even though music was playing…. Then pretty much constantly started doing that…

Finally this weekend went back to my factory head unit and I actually like it better. Also seems my sub and soeakerstsound a tad better with the factory unit.

Thats just my experience.

If you enjoy music while you drive hold off to get one with the Alpine system. For factory it is decent.

It's possible the Jeep has a 7" display and still has an Alpine amplifier. Mine is like this; Apine was an independent option that year.

Alpine gives the volume. Upgraded speakers gives the quality. Hard top with head liner helps too.

If you get the non-Alpine stereo but upgrade the 3.5" speakers you might be pretty happy unless you want more volume. I usually don't run the volume very high anyhow, even with the Alpine system.

I have the 7" non alpine unit. I think it's one of the worst sound systems I've ever had in a vehicle. I'm not an audiophile but I do like quality music. It's ok when the doors and top are on but It's terrible on the highway with those off. I would definitely recommend upgrading to the larger screen. I've been on the fence with upgrading mine to the Alpine i509-wrl-jl for the bigger screen and wireless carplay -- it's pricey but so is the 8.4 if you upgrade. There are ways to upgrade everything while still using that headunit if you aren't concerned with the size of the screen.

i used to have a 22 willys with 7.0 for 6 months. When the top or doors come off, the sound system is useless. it was adequate when my top and doors were all on.

I've been driving a 22 mojave for about 18 months now. the sound system is adequate for topless and/or doorless driving.

So the question is, are you stripping down your jeep?

Ill add to others and say the radio size doesn’t necessarily matter. I have 2020 with the 7in screen and the alpine system. So just be sure to look at the window sticker

I agree with the non alpine lack of effectiveness. Doors and top off useless pretty much. I did the alpine aftermarket “plug and play” and it’s much better.

Did you get the alpine headunit? The i509?

No I got a kit that included amp sub and speakers. I already have the 7” display and I’m good with that.
that said I did just buy out my lease so now everything is on the table for upgrade.
