Alu-Cab Canopy Camper Roll Call

Out of curiosity, what are you guys seeing regarding fuel consumption?

We have a '23 EcoDiesel with the ACCC installed (no interior yet) and on a recent 2500 mile roadtrip (with short stints on fireroads to find camp spots), we got just over 23mpg.

Still thinking of getting a roof rack with a wind deflector to not catch every single bug on the front of the camper ...

If lowered a few inches (what I was thinking of doing).

The best angle I could get to show the few inches of passenger side overhang. It wouldn't be a big deal to me since I am already watching for clearing my shower cube on that side.


Another option is the 813 Fabrication option that goes between the cab and the camper.

This is fantastic. Thanks so much! I am assuming that is the standard 2 gallon rotopox? I love the look of the 813 Fab option. This is just a more cost effective option.

With my diesel, exploring the Cascade mountains (lots of elevation gain and loss) I usually average around 19. Highway if I keep it under 70 MPH, I will get 23.

That's regeared to 4.10s and on 37" tires.

That's pretty impressive – is that what the onboard computer shows or calculated? We are on the OEM 33" Falken Wildpeak MT, so much smaller tires.

Here's real data (in metric), 10.14 average is about 23.2mpg.

Also, for some reason, it might be elevation changes, wind, crappier diesel, whatever – whenever I fill up in California, mileage is worse than when I fill up in other states. Even with otherwise similar driving conditions.

Yeah, that's based on the computer. I haven't bothered doing it by hand. Maybe on my next long trip.

The only time I have seen a big difference is winter diesel when I was in Montana in March. But I also add Everyday diesel to every fill-up, so that probably helps any crap diesel I have added to the tank.

I have had a 3 gallon mounted on my Rear Accessory Panel. I have it off at the moment while I am working on some heater options. But, I can bolt it back on so you can see where the can sits on my mount. I think it will have enough space above.

Quick question. Is anyone running a Rotopax under their exhaust for the Dickinson Marine Heater? I am just wondering if it fits.

Almost? If you've ever sat in a meeting with marketing people, you KNOW that this is the reason.

I'm not defending marketing and sales here (there's an old saying that goes "Sales $crews the customer while Marketing holds them down") but I think there is a simpler reason why the OBD computer is different than actual:

When calculating it yourself, you are using a calibrated odometer reading (if you have adjusted for tire size) and a gas pump reading that is also calibrated by state law. This should get you a result that is fairly accurate.

However, there is no flow meter in the the Jeep's fuel system to know exactly how much gas was pulled from the tank. The OBD must be using some predetermined value of "rated fuel flow" for it's calculation. I honestly don't know how the computer is doing it, but without a regularly calibrated meter (like the gas station pump has) there is no way it can return an actual fuel consumption, it's just an estimate.
