Am I the only one who thinks Jeep should’ve included an in dash CD player?

Nothing you know about the old system applies to the new one. That's why Starlink is such a game-changer; terrestrial quality of service but anywhere. My friends who have it are 100% satisfied.
Do you know of any living outside of AZ? Seriously, the atmosphere, the 5"/hour rains, the heavy snows and ice and having to maintain a dish are just some of the things that soured me.

According to cnet it's 99/month (plus 500 for equipment). I guess cell stays in our home for a while yet.
I figured bandwidth might be better - I knew that latency couldn't possibly be better, but the cost is pretty up there.

From their own mouths - this still bugs me -

What about bad weather and other obstructions?

"We recommend installing Starlink in a location that avoids snow build-up and other obstructions from blocking the field of view," the FAQ reads. "Heavy rain or wind can also affect your satellite internet connection, potentially leading to slower speeds or a rare outage."

I was into car audio competition in the 90s. I had an in-dash DAT ($1200+), had home-modified various systems, but always to go more modern. My entire life with cars, I've wanted what they have today; mech-less face with solid state only. My previous Jeep was fitted with the Alpine mech-less system since shortly after I bought it. Those stock systems were such trash.

Yes but not in heavy snow. So that's something you'd have to research specifically. Just keep in mind that the tech is vastly different, and throw away what you know now. And they DO have satisfied users in snowy places, I just have no idea what needs to be done to accommodate that.

I was into car audio competition in the late 1980s. My 87 Comanche had 4 tweeters, 4 midrange and 2 8" subs in a box I custom made to fit behind the seats (Comanche owners know how little space there was back there).
I used a material that exactly matched the interior carpet and colors to finish the box. Those subs drove directly into the backs of the seats.
Two tweeters were in the doors where electric lock and window switches might normally be, 2 midrange in the normal door areas, 2 in the corners back of the seats and 2 tweeters mounted up in the rear corners with deflectors to direct the high frequencies as desired.
I had an Alpine head unit in the dash and an EQ mounted to the right of center. The amps (two of them - one for the 8 speakers, 1 for the subs) mounted under the seats.
All connected via DIN cable between head unit, EQ and amps, and monster cable to the speakers. Passive cross-overs were mounted on the sub box back of the seats.
Power came through two breakers near the battery and into the cabin via 10 gauge wiring to the inside, then 12 gauge to individual pieces. (no voltage drop there LOL)
I had $3600 in my system which back then was pretty hefty price tag for me on my $0 farm income at that time. (I was pushing the limits of my credit card at the time, much to the dismay of my soon to be wife when I met her back then)

I knew guys who had digital audio (DAT) but never messed with one or really considered it.
I bet I still have the Alpine CD that had various tracks to check out the range of your system.

I ripped my CD's to FLAC (lossless) and store them on 2TB 2..5" portable hard drive which is almost full.

I've been impatiently waiting for Starlink since February in Southern AZ. Unfortunately, there are very few in AZ yet and none as far south that I am. I'm still hoping for the end of the year.

Yeah, the most-Southern person I know using it is in Carefree.

I just want it to go mobile so I can put one on the Jeep/travel trailer/boat and work from truly anywhere. There is ZERO limit on my days and mobility except to stay connected. I could camp for weeks with a connection, and still work.

Do you get a static IP and does it do VPN very well?

I've had dial-up since the days when you could download market reports and read them - at some leisure - as they came in.

Here's a tip on the "bars" on your phone - that's not data related. What that indicates is that your phone has heard from a tower and the tower signal comes back at you at that relative strength (bars are sort of like saying "how bad was the pain on a scale of 1 to 10" because it means different things at different times on different phones)
Correct, but I'll also add that the bars on the phone doesn't indicate " bandwidth saturation " either. You can be standing beside a tower and still have awful internet speed/access due to the ISP's network being over used at the time. Occurs all the time at football games, concerts and beaches.

Exactly. It indicates only the signal strength with which the tower is responding to a "ping" or request.
Nothing to do with data, nothing to do with bandwidth, speeds, whatever.
If the provider's network is saturated, it will be slow regardless of number of bars.
Good point.

I notice it here on my home network - data/connectivity provided by cell provider - certain times of days, certain days, things will be slower regardless of the RSRP, signal quality in dBm or other "indicators".

90% sure not static, and in fact probably using CGNAT and private IPs in the backbone, like cellular does. It does VPN great, some of my friends use it for a full time pirate server.

CGNAT means it's Double-NAT and that means some things simply won't function........... hoping for something that has an outside Internet address on the outside of the router and single NAT to the private address instead of having the router on a private network of the provider.
That's been a drawback of using cellular data - no outside address so I can't set up the router to allow myself access to some of my equipment from the outside.
Bummer.

Will need to look at it again when it's actually out of BETA and they have prices and other things settled. Right now, it's too fluid, too many unknowns and too expensive.
Sounds like the beta may be over by end of this year.
I don't mind supporting Musk (if it was Bezos it would be a definite no), but not quite yet.

I've been a network engineer for over 30 years. I know the past issues with CGNAT, and see zero evidence of any current issues with it or Starlink. I run a VoIP service now, and used to be really pestered by double NAT and CGNAT. Works fine now.

I would buy this in a split second if I didn't already have 1Gx35M at home. I've considered it anyway because of the 150M upload, and we send a lot of stuff to our servers.

I remember when they stopped doing tape players too….
Haha
I had Black Sabbath Mob Rules on 8 track. My second car had a factory 8 track in dash.

Is that atrax or however you spell it? I’m not being funny, I’m a 90’s baby. I’ve heard plenty of reference to them, but have never bothered to find out what they looked like.
That's the 8 track player or as asked a 8 Track "cassette or pre cassette pre CD.?
