Yep..that literally the catalyst for the 'feature' being introduced!
No, he wasn't. It was already being rolled out when his accident happened. He was just the high-profile incident and it sparked a lawsuit over how Jeep was rolling out the AutoPark recall, not that they needed to develop it. It was already a thing.

The actual catalyst was the stupid rotary shift knobs Jeep put in their SUVs that made it difficult for people to know whether or not they were in park.

exactly, or if the stinking thing would remember the setting. I work 2 miles from home. It starts and stops at least 4 times in that distance. It's gotta be killing my engine's longevity
Specifically, it's killing the starter.

Honestly, I'd be ok with the Auto Stop, if it wasn't so friggen quick to activate. If I'm sitting still for 10 seconds or something, fine.. but I can't tell you how much I hate the fact that it turns itself off the moment I come to a stop in my driveway, and am reaching down to put it into park.

Pull in... stop, reach down for park.. BOOM!!! Engine shuts off. I put it into park, it turns itself back on, just in time for me to turn it off again...

Drives. Me. Crazy.

Ditto .... I equate this to stupidity in programming. I had to drive a F-150 for a month that did the exact same thing?

No ... the starters have been engineered and tested for something like 1 million cycles. I have yet to see a single report of a failed starter due to the ESS system. My question is the ESS system causing other issues because people do not allow oil pressure to reestablish before driving off.

I have had one starter in my lifetime that has failed due to worn out carbon brushes. Most of time that I have replaced starters for others, they are burned up from over heating. Usually that happens from another no start condition, ie out of fuel or no spark. I don't see start stop wearing out a starter.

On that note, I still don't use it. I like to keep the cabin comfortable. I don't rely on the programming to turn off ess for cabin comfort.

SHORTED OUT WINCH WIRE!!

Smoked both batteries, and smoked a big fuse in the fuse box. No other damage.

All is back to normal.

Not a cheap shop charge, but dodged a huge bullet.

Thanks for all your advice.

Nice, Fuses for the win! I'm glad the issue wasn't deeper.

Do you run a disconnect on your power wire right after the battery connection? A lot of people don’t. People should in case if a winch power wire gets pinched in a vehicle accident. It could short out and cause a fire. But, I’m glad it was nothing major, and you are back running. Thanks for sharing.

I didn't, but I should have.

I ordered a quick connect/disconnect kit.

The power lead rubbed through the loom and the insulation and found the nearest place to short out.

Pricey lesson learned that could have ended a lot worse.

Thanks for the kind words.

Yep ... winch wiring needs to be very carefully routed and in my case I also ran secondary protection over the wires along with a cut off switch.

It's funny, I went to a local big chain store that sells 4 Wheel Parts (but I won't name them) and the two guys behind the counter literally berated me for wanting to buy the Warn Power Interrupt kit..."you don't need that" "the winch has its own on/off switch" etc. So I walked out, went home and ordered it off Am@zon. I'm assuming both of those guys behind the counter ride bicycles exclusively...
