This is from my previous post 8/22: Today's mod was the Alpine SPV-65-JLT soundbar speaker upgrade. After removing the factory speakers from the soundbar (premium sound system) one can really see the difference in the overall quality of the upgrades. Yes, a bit intimidating at first because once you commit to the install, there is no turning back due to the cuts. I just used a body saw and sliced it out. After about 100 hours of break in time the sound should be where I want it.

Updated comments after living with this mod for an eight-month timeframe: I don't think I would go with these particular speakers. I was hoping for better low-end punch which I never really got even after break-in. They are a bit louder however but with almost too much treble (tinny) from the dome tweeters. I tried all adjustments I could and stuffed the cavities full of poly foam. I would try a 6x9 or just leave the factory Alpines if I had to do it all over again. But as stated, once the cuts are made, there is no turning back.

Yes, the factory Alpine system already splits the signal into "woofer" and "tweeter" for the stock 4" and 3.5" speakers, respectively. The MTX speakers hook right up with the supplied harnesses (from Crutchfield) such that what was going to the 4" speaker now goes to the 6.5" speaker, and what was going to the 3.5" speaker now goes to the MTX component tweeter. It works great. The bass response is tight and strong and the highs are crisp.

The issue here is that these are so much larger than the ones they replace--and hang so much lower--that the soundstage is effectively moved even more rearward in the vehicle. I bought those Terra Acoustic speakers for the dash corners, but they are less efficient and, mixed with these, it seems like almost all the sound is coming from behind my head. Therefore, I took out the Terra Acoustics and put some very "bright" Infinity 3032's in the dash corners to make up for this to some extent, which helps, but with the way the MTX speakers in the pods hang down, they're literally right behind your head. They sound great but I am trying to figure out how to bring the soundstage forward without having to add an amp.
I bought the Hertz Dieci Series DCX-873 3.5" to replace the stock speakers and they sound amazing! I would recommend these. I also did sound deadening as good as I could up in the dash corners with poly fill. They made a HUGE difference and they were not expensive.

Huh, I won some upgraded front dash speakers at EJS last year before I bought the Gladiator. I should actually get those swapped in at some point since I have them.
