A long block can be had for a little over $3k. I'd be tempted to go that route before allowing somebody to get inside my engine.

Back in the day my friends and I used to say "I pity the fool who has to take this back apart" as we Permatexed both sides of gaskets (with the smelly thick adhesive-like Permatex). That fool was always us at some later date.

I owned a 2013 WK2 Grand Cherokee for 10 years. Only had two issues with it. The OEM battery gave up the ghost after 8 years which is amazing for a OEM battery and the oil pressure switch. That took me 6 hours to replace it. I'm sure the engineers had a round table to brainstorm how to make it the most difficult task to change a $60 part.

They must be in cahoots with those 90s GM engineers that thought it was a cool idea to put the starter in the fucking lifter valley of those shitty Cadillac Northstar engines.

Me: Hey I'm doing a starter replacement on a Caddy I need intake gaskets.
Parts guy: What?
Me: Just fucking get it.

My previous '21 Sierra AT4 Duramax had the timing belt in the back. I imagine that would have taken about six months of labor to replace by me.

Oh yeah don't even get me started on 80s/90s SAABs. Omg their engines were mounted backwards. All the accessory belts were between the engine and firewall.

An Engineer will walk past 50 virgins just to F a mechanic.

@Greg_L I worked at Cadillac back then. Whomever designed those head gaskets was a joke too. You would replace the gasket, start torqueing the head back down in their fancy method and all of a sudden 'POP', the head bolts would pull out of the block. GM provided thread inserts for that repair...which also sucked and pulled out. Jasper Engines had the right thread repair inserts, so we bought from them. Eventually GM agreed to pay for those inserts because it was cheaper than multiple come-backs and new blocks.

Yup I remember those shitty torque-to-yield bolts and their threading problems.

An anecdote:

When I was in college for mechanical engineering (way back when), I was floored by the number of mechanical engineering students in their senior year who had never wrenched on anything. They had never heard of a ratchet wrench or changed a tire or soldered a wire or done any of the things you would expect a mechanical engineer to know, and certainly had never experienced the frustration of removing, disassembling, repairing, and reinstalling something that been poorly designed. I figure this is how we end up with the crap we do. I believe a prerequisite to mechanical engineering should be a year as an auto mechanic, or equivalent experience as a backyard mechanic.

I came here to mention the Northstar starter and you threw out a SAAB. Everything about those cars was weird. But I still loved them.

It wasn't phonetically accurate, but we used to say SAAB stood for "Son Af A Bitch".

Fairly certain I still have scars on my knuckles from a 900T. So yes, this tracks.
