Never use it. Got into the habit of switching it off every time I start the vehicle and don't give it a second thought. My Gladiator is 4 years old and still on the factory batteries. Changing out next month to new batteries and going for 5.
Same here...2020 Rubicon, had both batteries changed in January just coz...

I bought a stop-start deactivation device and never looked back. The device just makes sure it remembers your last setting, so if you shut it off once, it’ll stay off until you want it on. If you ever want it on.

Funny how the op posts a question and now we aren't answering it but giving our own two cents on the problem or solutions that we've taken.

Why is it not so called hard wired to do this (auto on/off) regardless?
Jeep wants the bump in fuel economy to help sell more Jeeps. Jeep made the feature optional to avoid alienating logical buyers who might consider the other costs of running such a feature to help sell more Jeeps.

Seeing as how the very first response gave OP the correct answer, there is nothing more to add to explain it.

Short answer: Stop/Start switch = EPA credits.

Reminds me of a car I bought in 2014 with a start stop switch that remembered its last drive setting. The next year, the same model car lost that memory feature and reset to start/stop at the beginning of every drive like our Jeeps. Again, a new EPA rule was the catalyst.

With the long list of reasons for it not to engage, are there studies showing how effective the system is at reducing fuel consumption or is it all just a theory? Is the savings in gas offset by expense of additional battery requirements, and starter wear?
Studies have been done. The fuel savings is in the 5% to 7% range.
And the second battery is just one way of implementing ESS. Other manufacturers use a single battery.
And the starter motor is supposedly designed to handle the additional start cycles.
