For the smarter ones, everyone complains about the switch (Auto Start Stop) or doesn’t complain… blah blah.

I don't care about all the geo political mumbo hype.

My question is… if this is so important to ALL manufactures/EPA, why is it a switch? Maybe this has be discussed before and I missed it. But why?

Why is it not so called hard wired to do this (auto on/off) regardless? Does anyone know why the "system" doesn’t do this regardless and we would have no switch to bitch about???? …..

Here you go:

“ The Environmental Protection Agency offers incentives to manufacturers who force their auto stop/start systems to switch back on. If the system is “nonlatching” — in other words, it doesn’t stay off after you switch off the car — the EPA only calculates fuel economy figures when the system is engaged. If they allow the system to be permanently defeated, then they test fuel economy with the system on and off. After that, the EPA averages the two fuel economy figures. Since that number will always be lower than it will with the system engaged, manufacturers switch it back on when you start the car again.”

The switch just appeases folks like us who complain about it while still meeting some level of government regulation.

The vehicle already has a lengthy algorithm it goes through to decide if it should shut off or stay on if the override switch is not activated.

@ShadowsPapa probably has that list or could speak to it further than you'd want to hear about it

The other why... Why do some manufacturers provide a switch that can be set off and it remembers vs Jeep that allows it to be off until restarted? I would think all vehicles sold in the USA with the ability would have to operate the same way.

With the long list of reasons for it not to engage, are there studies showing how effective the system is at reducing fuel consumption or is it all just a theory? Is the savings in gas offset by expense of additional battery requirements, and starter wear?

I added a device to remember I want it off.

I'm a cheap skate and don't feel like buying anything additional so I just press the button out of habit now. Often as I'm coming to my first stop of the drive. My drive to work is very short - I don't need any additional shut downs preventing the vehicle from warming up. And I just find it annoying. Some folks don't notice it - it is wildly apparent to me when its doing its thing though.

It's so engrained now that when I drive my 2015 Camaro SS I briefly look down for the button coming to my first stop and remember I'm not in my truck.

Never use it. Got into the habit of switching it off every time I start the vehicle and don't give it a second thought. My Gladiator is 4 years old and still on the factory batteries. Changing out next month to new batteries and going for 5.

Mine rarely activates. Although when I first got the gladiator it would shut off at stoplights and I kept turning the motor back on because I thought the motor had died. This was because of some of my previous vehicles dying at stoplights. Now the auto stop only happens in drive thru's when I'm stopped for a long time never at a stoplight.

In the AM 1) I press “Start”, and after it does so, 2) I press the “Stop/Start” button and shut the SoB off. I look at it as a means by which I extend the life of the very expensive starter by 500% or more. Any fuel savings from these crock of crap systems will be flushed the first time it either leaves you stranded at a stop light when it doesn’t restart, or when the starter fries. JMHO, of course.

Too many memories of my hand me down 65 LeMans stalling out at traffic lights. Get out, take the air cleaner cover off, open choke
plate, screw driver down the throat to hold the choke open, hit the starter with pedal floored. Reverse the process, drive on. Ignore the angry glares of those waiting behind you. Never use the ESS.

I’ve noticed that if you turn the wheel about a quarter/half turn to the left or right the auto start/stop does not engage. Also works to ‘force’ a start when stopped without pressing the accelerator.
