I stumbled across this post on reddit last night and ive never seen or heard about this.

This user plugs a battery tender into his hitch plug. maybe it would benefit some members here if it works.

Can someone explain this to me? Ive thought about it a few times and i cant make it make sense. Im unsure how a charge current goes though the hitch plug to charge a battery. i would not expect the wiring to be able to handle that load.

It does work. A few people here do that.

It's just a wire from the 7 pin connector to battery hot with a 30A fuse I believe.

You don't get crazy and fast charge 30 amps through it, lol. Folks are using trickle chargers / low amp chargers through that plug.

Using this on the Gladiator since 2021 and a Grand Cherokee diesel from 2018. No problems. Don't have the GC anymore (HPFP failure and rear main seal leak) and the Gladiator is still on the original batteries. If its in the garage, its plugged in.

Bonus is that the 7-pin outlet gives you a 12vdc power port at the rear bumper which is always powered.

Related but unrelated, is there a simple way to make the +12 in the trailer plug ACC switched? Like a simple fuse swap? ( I know some vehicles have that).

I'd like to use it as an ACC trigger for a DC-DC charger on my trailer. If theres no factory way to make it switched I'll run it through a switched relay.

I travel a lot for work, often gone for long durations. I have been using these with great success:

I do it and it works great. My Jeep sits for sometimes weeks as I use a better MPG vehicle as my DD. Keeps the battery topped.

Got these delivered 11 days ago. Works well for my situation. Been too cold last few days but garage will be heated next year (charger says don't use below -4F, i don't want to risk it)

People Work?
I considered do it, but I always enter the truck from the front and back out of the garage, so the likelihood of forgetting it's plugged in and tearing something up is relatively high.

Heard that! I made a little laminated sign that I put on the front of the instrument cluster for when I plug in my block heater. It's worked so far....LOL

I have my cord dangling over my front tire and yes, I have driven off more than once with it plugged in. It will not damage anything until you are one month pass the warranty on the battery tender. Then you will need to purchase a new one like I did this week.

Been doing this for a while on the Jeep and my truck. If its going to sit for a few days I plug in the trickle charger and put in the plug. Keeps them fully charged. 2021 Mojave, still on both original batteries.

Which charger/maintainer are you using?
