It'll be interesting to see what options there will be moving forward.

CAFE has been a failure. It forces bigger vehicles, not more efficient vehicles. Can't make the old 2 door long bed little pickups that were popular for a while. Yea it would get better mileage but under CAFE it would need to get 60mpg or something ridiculous like that. I have a saying I used, "Drive the behavior you want" They are not doing that, they are forcing bigger and bigger trucks to be able to meet the MPG requirement.

I think vehicle size is a direct result of evolving safety standards.

Not surprising, V8s can't meet CAFE standards and can't match the performance and power of EVs.
But they work in cold weather and don't explode as violently!

Honestly it's not surprising, I mean, I see wranglers EVERYWHERE, but not 392's. Those are expensive toys that not many people buy.
Aren’t most just expensive toys?
I am in a smaller town, and we have 5-6 392 wranglers running around ??‍♂

Turbo v6 would be nice.

CAFE is part of the equation too.

CAFE standards have leniencies for larger wheelbases, forcing trucks to either become more efficient or get bigger. Well, you've seen the evolution of trucks over the last 30 years, it should be pretty obvious which route the mnfrs chose to take.
