Those are pretty slick. Like you say, a simple solution and you're off the ground. I personally prefer that for cleanliness. If someone is looking for a tent like that, I have one that needs a new home. They're actually pretty cool leveraging the tailgate like they do. Just longer to setup that I'm willing to spend.
The first few times I thought the same about setup time but like everything else the more you do it the easiest it gets. Now it's just a few minutes as soon as I arrive and done. On the way home I drop it on everything underneath, throw a cargo net over it and clean up and sort the mess out when I get home or next day.

Since I live in the Southwest this is a 4 season setup except in really snowy areas which are easy to avoid for me. Many times I don't even put up the tent, just a mattress and sleeping bag on the bed and done. Wife requires more privacy so she's the final vote when she comes along.

I always thought about set up as part of the ā€œritualā€ of camping. If you’re going to be camping there’s nothing else to really do but sit watch wood burn anyway. 5 minutes setting up isn’t really that big of a deal.

I tried to wrap my mind around having an RTT on my vehicle all the time but I just can't. So I try to do it as simple as I can. This is in my old Gladiator. Have not taken the new Mojave out for a camping trip yet. Foam mattress for the truck bed, a sleeping bag, meat for the fire, a cooler full of treats and adult beverages and I'm gone...

That's how I rolled out in the beginning. K.I.S.S. Just use what you have and get out into the wilderness.

Looks like I may have missed the tent camping season here in my part of Texas. We really only have a short window to camp without being covered in sweat. The heat and humidity here is astounding.

Nothing is worse then walking into your tent and it smells like the losing football team's locker room...

Same here in Louisiana.

I chuckle when northerners talk about summer being camping season when over here we gotta camp November to March šŸ˜„

My son is going to Ft. Polk this weekend for a month of training and will be out in the woods most of that time. I told him you have no idea of how hot and humid it can be until you’ve spent time in LA!

It's a shame because camping season here on public land is problematic because it basically overlays with all of the hunting seasons (and I don't like to be in the woods then / disturb that) and summer is 'pretty' and drier around here but absolutely oppressive šŸ˜‚

I chose the Napier, cause it had a full floor. I was worried about having a dirty truck bed.

I bought the C6 Outdoors Rev Tent on a whim, basically. I thought, meh , It'll do for a while. I was very wrong. You can use it on the ground, in the bed of a truck, or up on a rack. Plus, the whole thing is only about 30 lbs, not 150+ like a regular RTT.

When I received it and assembled it for the first time, I was worried that the rainfly that came with it was not going to be enough for the Alaskan Spring/Fall rains. I bought the Stormshield heavy duty rain cover and slapped it on as well.

With everything on the tent, I plopped it down on top of my rack, and headed out to do some testing before next week's big Denali trip. This thing was like a Tardis on the inside.

I was shocked at how warm the tent was, even with 10-20mph winds coming off the Turnagain Arm. The inside of the Stormshield is also a thermal barrier. I used 2 of my very oldest sleeping bags, opened all the way up and used them as a set of blankets. Completely comfortable every single night.

I am happily pleased with the setup, and the fact that it didnt cost NEARLY as much as a full RTT setup.

Worth it.

Looks nice and peaceful.
About 10 years ago, I tried to get the wife to let me buy some land around the Golden Valley area. She said "that's out in the middle of nowhere."
I said, "EXACTLY!" She didn't go for it.
Recently she almost admitted I was right and that we should of.
I know the feeling, in 2016, I wanted to pull the trigger on 5 acres just south of Livingston Montana overlooking the river (would have had to use an "easement" to walk down there though, but wasn't an issue) for $25K and wanted to use bonus money to outright pay for it. "we" said not yet so I passed, now similar is going for $400-500K and it ain't going to happen.....

Recent motto is "strike while the iron is hot", I can make more money, at least for a few more years.....

Y'all have me feeling nostalgic and missing simplicity.

Funny, I went opposite. I didn’t want to take my totes out so I needed it to be floorless, my totes sleep on the left I sleep on the right.
