Morning, just curious what’s everyone’s plan for proper break in now that we are seeing members taking possession.

The manual states that a break-in isn't needed on this engine. Drive it like you plan to from the start.

Does it really? If so I applaud Jeep for finally doing this. There is no break in required on any new mainstream engine these days. It's about time manufacturers started taking that outdated section out of their manuals!

Since mine is being built, I decided to read the manual today. Here is the page about break-in.

I’m going to drive mine as if I’m breaking in new gears. no mashing the throttle. Cool off periods every 30 mins of driving. Not exceeding 60mph the first 500 miles. Not pulling anything over 2500lbs the first 2500 miles

after that it’s getting big tires and high doses of wot all the time in perpetuity

It is also saying that light or no load driving will prolong the engine reaching full efficiency. While towing is not recommended for the first 500 miles, medium load every now and then (like occasionally driving on hilly roads) may hasten the engine reaching full efficiency faster.

So I noticed the thing about light/no load would prolong the efficiency I didn’t see where it said no load for the first 500.

Anywho, as someone else said, most engine manufacturers have done away with the break in requirements. I can’t remember which bike it was I bought (Harley maybe) but the salesman told me no need, “Drive it like you stole it if that’s your style” then showed me no break in required in the manual and showed me a video. All the motors were made in one plant where they are assembled down a line. At the end of the line, 9 were dropped onto a rack, hooked up and ran for “X” number of hours while monitored with different sensors to check for harmonics, heat variations and vibration. It was kinda cool. Basically the motors are broke in before they leave the engine plant headed to one of the bike assembly lines. I chalk it up to better QC. checking the motors before they leave.

The Diesel supplement says no towing for first 500 miles on page 29. In the “Towing Requirements” section.

All - Have owned diesel engines for 30 years. Drove then for living 5 years. Own diesel motorhomes for last 12 years. Towed 29' 5th wheel with diesel pickup. Trust me, no jack rabbit starts, let it warm up for at least couple minutes, if after prolonged highway travel, let it cool down (turbo) for 2-3 minutes. And take it mostly easy for the first 2,500 miles. On real cold mornings, let it warm up 3 minutes. Highway speeds are fine once warm, and vary speed for that 2,500 miles. Since assuming cast iron block, different materials for pistons, rings, valves, and cam shaft. Let all that warm up before load. If you cannot do that, then you should have bought gas engine.

Your kidding right? These new motors and driveline components were not designed or manufactured in the 80's. Drive it. The manual says that. Ok, so maybe not tow for the first 500 miles... But that's it. It says the engine might not reach full efficiency under light loads - yes - A modern engine attribute, they don't make as much power and generally not as efficiently as they can be till they are warm. Nowhere in that sentence was distance in the equation, only duration.

I wish I would have seen this before I towed, I am shocked it wasn't included in the manual!!!, and was added as a 'supplement' Also I see in the supplement it states Diesel (all models) are rated at 3500lbs max tow. Is that right?

Yeah, and I think one of the reasons for it is to avoid overheating the engine due to constraint in air cooling.

No that's not true, not sure where you saw that - my Diesel Sport S with tow package is rated at 6,500 lb max gross trailer weight with a 650 lb max tongue weight
