Hello everyone! This is my first post. I was curious if anyone is having issues with their EGR not completing for Smog. I bought my Gladiator out of state and one of my requirements registering it is passing Smog. Not sure why, but my Jeep isn’t showing the EGR being completed. Took it to the dealership and they said they reset everything and that I need to drive it. But still no luck yet. Has anyone had an issue with their EGR? Any info would be helpful as I’m shooting in the dark right now.

Are you saying the smog test machines won't register it as completed and passing and thus won't give you the certificate?

I brought an Audi into CA that was too new for even the dealer to have the ability to read it's smog, it wasn't in their system yet bc all the ones they sell in state come pre-certified. Is that what you are saying?

The smog machine can read it. The EGR is not showing completed. Just keeps flashing indicating it hasn’t been completed yet. I have 1,132 miles on the Jeep.

Keep after the dealer for a fix. As long as you have not made any mods to the engine or exhaust systems, Jeep is responsible to make sure it passes emissions tests, while under warranty.

I think I’m gonna have to go back. No mods yet.

Try stop/go driving and keeps it under 65mph, any above that don't count. Let it cool down completely than do it again. Might takes a few drive cycles to be ready. Good luck

200 miles is a very short period of time to have all the emissions cycles register complete. You guys aren't "failing". "Not ready" is what it'll say if you plug in an obd scanner. If it fails, you'll have a Check Engine Light. You just gotta keep driving until it is. There might be a drive cycle posted that'll help put. I don't live in California, but I'm surprised you have to do emissions on a brand new vehicle. We don't have to do it until the next year here. Probably for this very reason. The tests take forever to complete. And if you disconnect your battery, it starts all over again.

Yeah, I’ll look for that drive cycle to see if I can figure it out. But it’s this weird dance of getting the monitors ready AND registering the car within 10 days. So I’m stuck facing more fines if I can’t get it ready soon.

I am having issues with just my EGR monitor going ready. I bought my jeep in Hawaii and it is a 2020 with about 17000 miles on it. Shipped it to Cali and arrived Dec 16 2021 but the battery died in transit and had to jump start it. Well I have had the computer flashed Early February because I could not get it to go ready and was just told to drive it. They cannot tell me a specific drive cycle either and I have tried everything I could find on the internet so far. Really frustrated. I am about to drop it off for my second visit on my way to lemon lawing this piece of crap! Have put about 1000 miles on it since they told me to just drive it which is absolute garbage! I am considering suing chrysler instead of lemon lawing it if they cannot get it to pass smog.

You can't lemon law it. It's not broken, and it's not their fault you bought out of state. You also can't lemon law a used car. If something is wrong with emissions, you get a check engine light. It's doing exactly what it's supposed to. Also, every time they flash it or reset it or pull the battery, it starts all over again. I don't have to do emissions on brand new cars here, but for s&g's, I monitored it often on my last car when I got it. It was not a jeep. It took like 2 months before everything got to "ready". Unfortunately, emissions is more strict these days, which means the self tests are more complicated, and take longer than they used to. Do you have a code reader? It'll tell you when it's ready. I did post the drive cycle above, though. JL Wrangler will be exactly the same.

I am required to pass smog to bring it in state and register it and it was bought new from chrysler, not used. It Does not have to be bought in Cali if the vehicle is California emissions compliant to apply under Cali Lemon Laws....already consulted someone on this....it was a new vehicle and the emissions system is still under warranty to work as intended. It can also fail to run the monitor test without the check engine light appearing based on different conditions the PCM is looking for but the dealer is unwilling to look into that without the CEL or perform mode 6 diagnosis. Also for your knowledge, all vehicles sold new from Hawaii Dealerships where I bought it are required to be California Emissions Compliant and the emissions sticker under the hood also says California compliant. I think I am well qualified for lemon law after my fourth visit. I have also tried that listed drive cycle but it still does not work, so running the vehicle for thousands of miles to get it to run a test that should run under certain conditions and it still does not run, in anyones eyes is a failure of the emissions system. It is indeed broken! I have been doing drive cycles and long trips every day now, and that should not be necessary to get the PCM to run this test, and Chrysler cannot even tell you what will make it run the test. This is unsatisfactory and I demand they fix it! You sound like you work for them.

If you think you can successfully get your money back using the Lemon Laws, then you should pursue that route. Just be sure to buy the replacement vehicle in California, or you may run into the exact same problem with the next one.

I am curious as to how you managed to purchase a 2020 model with 17k miles that had never been registered.

PA requires CA emissions too, so I understand that. But we still don't require emissions on brand new vehicles that quickly, for this very reason. The tests take forever on modern cars. Lots of states follow CARB emissions requirements. Actually, pretty much the whole northeast does, from Maryland up. If it's a warranty issue, you're absolutely correct, it's under warranty, for 10 years/100k miles federally, and they have to fix it. I wasn't aware you could lemon law a used vehicle though, but every state is diifferent, and it looks like CA allows it. But it seems like it's just slow to get to readiness, rather than broken. Lots of new cars suffer from this issue. Best of luck to you.

I don't work for any manufacturer, and have owned just about every brand under the sun. But I've also seen this issue crop up before. Unfortunately, it's a problem for "importing" to CA from even other CARB states. I've seen the same issue on Subaru and VW forums. Most other states don't fail on one "not ready," and also allow a certain number of years before emissions testing is required. It's a true PIA. Not trying to be condescending. I realize you're frustrated. The best thing you can do is keep driving, and don't pull the battery or reset the ECU, because that causes all the emissions tests start all over again...
