Right. That mat nipple needs to snap in and the carpet can get in the way.Did you press the rubber down into the drain hole? You shouldn't have any leaks after that. Definitely shouldn't be needing caulk.
I've used dish soap to help, too. But if that carpet isn't totally clear of that hole, it prevents it from seating and snapping in. Sometimes you need to wiggle the mat a bit to get that nipple through the carpet hole. It'll go.
