Starting with my third fill-up, I've been consistently able to put in over 21 gallons. I manually track every tank of gas in a spreadsheet, and the numbers don't lie. My AVERAGE fill-up is 21.769 gallons, and that's after about 55 tanks. This isn't a fluke.
It definitely requires patience to get those last few gallons pumped, and some gas stations (& even certain gas pumps) are easier for this task than others. Just like many people report, the pump almost always shuts off the first time around 18 gallons for me too - depending on how close to "actually empty" I decided to run. After that first click, it'll take me 5 minutes or more to top off. Slow and steady absolutely works, along with keeping the gas nozzle barely inserted... so that I can keep an eye on the gas in the filler neck. If the gas in the neck starts to back up toward the top, I just slow down even more or stop for a couple of seconds. Going to a station & a particular gas pump which allows slow dispensing is a must. Some are just awful, with tight springs/handles that are more like an On-Off switch. With this being my DD, I can usually time my fill-ups to stop at a station that I know works well for me.
Having done this as many times as I have, I can tell when it's getting close to "really full". Very rarely have I gotten gasoline splash-back, but it has happened... usually at one of those On-Off pumps.
This is just my experience. But, I can absolutely attest that we have at least a 22 gallon tank. There may even be a bit more useable capacity than that, but I don't want to push the envelope any more than I already do.
