And fuel costs more...
I did cost comparisons using reported mpg from diesel owners and compared to my real number - I used the costs of diesel fuel in my area and gas in my area. I also picked another state's average costs using one of those fuel cost sites.
What I came up with - it's a wash as far as cost/mile driven for fuel.
So there's no advantage to the big 'brags' of how many mpg diesel owners talk about.
Ho-hum. Next.

I'd be more thinking of over-all cost per mile.

But like I said - too often low fuel mileage is the owner's own doing -
Either how they drive, or, the equipment they put on.
I did a solid, easy, 22 mpg average in FL.

So I have a new JT overland and the gas mileage is not impressive. I've mainly drove in the city but really short commutes. Farthest I've taken it on the highway is maybe about 15 miles. Right now it's showing me my average is 14.3 mpg. Is this standard? Everything I've read has said it should be about 17 city, 23 highway. This is my first Jeep, so maybe this is just expected lol. But curious to see what other's have experienced!
you need to go more than 15 miles on hwy to get an accurate mpg for hwy. then an avg between in town...

Always 20 mpg. But I'm a comically gentle driver. Monty Python could do a skit on my driving habits. After 20,000 miles I could probably count on one hand the times on road that I've had the gas pedal down more than 1/2 way.

That's strange, I just checked my spreadsheet and at 29,774 miles I put 21.669 gallons in.
I must have been on fumes.

The EPA rates city driving at 21 MPH and the highway driving is at 48MPH. Very misleading. The 14.3 is a good mileage. (Source: https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a15388892/the-truth-about-epa-city-highway-mpg-estimates/)

21 mph AVERAGE speed in city is generous. You can use a GPS or other device and get your average speed going through town and I'd bet it's less than that by the time you account for stops and traffic. I've tracked it with my phone. Even going through Des Moines (not counting I235) no way you'll make an average of 21 mph east to west. Lots of stops and idling.

The highway part is off, on the other hand, the difference between 45 and 55 is minimal. Once you pass that mark you can see the differences. And going over 60-65 because wind resistance increases exponentially with speed - there ya go.
I think 55 to 65 would be a lot more realistic test of highway driving, and yet around much of GA, especially the Atlanta area, you won't make an average of 48 mph unless you travel through after 10 pm and even then we found all it takes is 1 or 2 idiots and you SIT for an hour (literally)
So maybe the guy who made up the tests for the EPA is from Georgia, the Atlanta area LOL

I get 20.1 with mixed driving. In town only about 19.5-20. I did not disable anything (ASS, etc). But I-have a stock sport s max tow which is lighter in weight.
