Gas Tank Filling

I know the capacity of our tanks are 22 gallons.
When I run my fuel down to indicated empty, fuel light on, I can only get 17 to 18 gallons in.
Is my gauge that inaccurate, or is that intentional by Jeep?

I never knew the capacity was 22 gallons. I've never gotten more than 18 gallons in the truck. That's 20 miles after the yellow low fuel light comes on.

on my recent trip, I ran for 22 miles after my "low fuel" indicator came on, which comes on once you get below 10 miles to empty, at least on my '21 Mojave. I emptied my two Roto Pax into the tank, approx. 4 gallons and then pumped in 18.2 gallons at the pump, so I was pretty much empty. Normally my fill ups are between 16.5 - 18 gallons and part of that I think is a function of the pump I am using. Most shut off but I can still add 1.5 to 2 gallons. Some will shoot gas out of the tank when it kicks off and I always have the nozzle set on the lowest flow level. When that happens, I am lucky if I can round the total up to the next even dollar amount.

my gauge is red and says im 16 miles to empty. i am getting gas in one hour. i will update with pictures.

ive gotten 20 gals once, My experience matches other posters, 17-18 gallons when my fuel light comes on. I never let it get red, but today i did.

I think it is by design personally and purposefully set that way.

jeep stated i was 21 miles to empty. i was in the yellow, below a 1/4 tank but not red yet, one notch away. forgot to take a picture of it.

18.963 gallons. range states 313 miles to empty. My JT states i get 15.4 MPG, i calculate closer to 14.5. My speedometer is dead on with gps, idk how my JT calculates the MPGS, but manually Im logging a plus/minus of 1 mpg.

Its wild to me that people think when the light comes on that it means the tank is 100% empty. The light indicates low fuel, not tank empty. The tank has a capacity of 22 gal when bone dry empty. Rule of thumb on any vehicle, When the light comes on you have a "reserve" or roughly 50 miles of range left. Yes, the low light comes on at 30 miles left. But I have found that to be inaccurate.

It adjusts as you drive. If you stop with that light on and 30 miles left, next restart may show you have 50 miles left, depending on conditions at that time.
I've watched mine stay at 50 miles remaining while I drive 2 more miles, or I've seen it drop from 50 to 48, for example, after going less than a mile.

People don't understand that this thing takes the environment and driving conditions both current and historical into account.
It's not 1960 any more.

There are several threads on this exact topic - some quite long - two of those threads have been linked to. There's no one single answer - don't get all concerned about it. Just drive it and fill it with what it will take before the nozzle shuts off.

Empty oil capacity is 5.5 quarts, too - but you should only add 5 quarts during a change.
Don't get stuck on that 22 number - no one advertises fuel capacity at "usable gallons". It's a gross capacity number.

I just go by my "Range" reading. My low fuel light come on when that hits 30 mile range. Been that way ever since I got it. It calculates from how you're driving as well. I have had the low gas warning shut off also, when I started driving a little gentler so to speak! The "Range" goes to just reading LOW at 10 miles

It's accurate. It's intentional.

I choose not to play the game of "how many more miles can I get out of this thing before I get more fuel." I just get more fuel. Got bigger fish to fry.

I have a 2018 Ram 2500 (30g) and a 2010 Nissan Xterra (21g). Same story on the low fuel light and how much is left in the tank. Not just a Jeep thing. As others have stated, it's low on fuel, not out of fuel and it is intentional by the car makers. Gives you a buffer to get to a station.
