Just off the phone with the Service Adviser. It took them 3 weeks to get to the problem (yes, it was over the holidays, so I kind of understand).

The engine block was cracked at the #4 and #6 cylinders, allowing coolant in. The fix is a completely new engine. They are sending the findings to the warranty department to see if they will cover it.

I asked the SA what she thought would cause an engine block to crack at 40000 miles. " It must have overheated". is what she said.

The truck has never gotten hot. I have towed things, but the truck has never overheated while doing so. I think that is just crazy.

Of note, they are going to charge me $400+ to remove and reinstall my aftermarket Genesis Offroad Dual battery system.

I asked how long. She said a few weeks.
You’ve never towed a damn thing.

I think the computer logs towing miles, it can tell when there's something plugged into the trailer lights. But you do have a bicycle rack that fits on the tow hitch, and as a conservative and safe driver, you added tail lights to the rack for safety.

(I actually did this and it does help)

They tipped you off as to how they will deny the warranty claim. It's going to be on them to find other proof of overheating - so make them work for it. It's not your job (or even possible) to prove something didn't happen.

Yes, this 250# trailer and cargo most certainly would have stressed the engine so badly that it couldn't take towing 3.6% of its towing capacity and overheated to the point the block cracked.

It is rare for a block to crack and not overheat. I'm not saying "IMPOSSIBLE!" but in my experience - and likely THEIR experience - that's the typical reason.

For the dual battery system - that's the cost of such a mod. I don't blame them.

Your service advisor should really keep their mouth shut and any unsubstantiate opinion out of this. They just need to document what they found and let the adjustor for the MOPAR extended warranty come to their own conclusions.

Too bad the factory original installed OEM engines do not come with overheat tabs like the replacement rebuilds do as it would put to rest any overheat question. For all we know the engine block had a casting flaw that finally propagated to being a problem in normal use.

It is easy to be pessimistic and say they will do anything to get out of honoring the extended warranty, but I am not in that camp. If you can show normal maintenance, they should honor it.

Overheat tabs
Installed on rebuild/reman or service designated replacements generally where the freeze plugs go. Shows if the engine has overheated and to what degree.

I spoke with the SA yesterday.

Mopar will cover the repairs, a remanufactured engine.

I had to laugh. Mopar will not cover new spark plugs. They want them to remove the spark plugs from the bad engine and install them in the new motor. Cost for new plugs is $200+. Of course I will buy new plugs. So silly.

The total cost for the engine is $730.

The remanufactured engine is weeks out. My SA says it will be a month plus till it is done.

Plugs are considered a wear item. They may also want to charge you for coolant and oil.

She did not mention it, so I doubt it.

I missed the $730 cost in your post. I am betting that that fluids is rolled up in that if they did not line item it separate.

Unless you are under the factory powertrain warranty (which you are not), there is always some incidental charges that are never covered under extended warranty replacements. Still better than shouldering the whole cost 100%.
