A good friend of mine is running his Wrangler without a spare when driving on the road. His point is that there is almost no chance of him getting a flat with his big mudders.

So. Have any of you gotten a flat on-road while driving with large tires?

Thanks. Just curious

If your friends rationale is that his tread chunks are taller than any possible road debris... I mean he's just wildly wrong. I'll never forget the time my wife came home with a full tang steak knife (sans handle) stuck in the body panel underneath the passengers side door. Pretty sure a steak knife that can can stab through a body panel can make it through a tire.

Also, can we talk about the fact that he's running mudders and obviously doesn't drive in mud? A spare is much more important offroad than on.

All that protection in the treads, and his obvious weak spot is the sidewall. I hope he has AAA, because it's just a matter of time.

I wish they made oversized spares that collapse down like those fancy german spare tires. I wouldn't need a full blown M/T spare, but running with no spare at all seems like asking for trouble.

I’ve never needed to use my spare on the road (35” KO2) but I have picked up several nails/screws over the past 4 years running them. Only one nail actually made it through and required a patch. It was ~ 3 inches. The others lodged in the lugs.

I don’t run without a spare.

Everyone's experiences are different. I live in a small town so there are no freeways. I own a business that has 3 or 4 fleet vehicles out at any given time (at night as well) along with my truck, driving plenty of 65 mph highways and county roads. I have only had to drop a spare and install it once in the last 10 years on one of my fleet vehicles. That was because I didnt have a plug kit on me. All other flat tire events were able to be aired up and driven to the tire shop for repair/replacement. I even reseated a bead with the old starter fluid trick then took it to the shop. Its faster than dropping the spare.

I think an air compressor and plug kit are at least as valuable as a spare.

One time about 10 years ago one of my crews hit something on the highway and destroyed a tire. The spare tire hoist locked up and we couldn't get the spare down. I had to trailer that van anyway.

I got a flat on my Power Wagon with new 37" Toyo MT's. Had around a 1K on them. A nail right between the knobs.

Years ago. Had a Vette come in on a flat bed. Flat tire. The guy ran over a 7" piece of all tread. It went through the tire and rim. Poked a nice hole in the rim.

I've pulled spark plugs, nails, animal bones, bolts, glass, you name it out of tires when I worked for Goodyear many moons ago. Remember that a lot of junk is just outside of the white line on the road. If you cross it. Chances are that you may pick something up. Or the guy in front of you crosses and tosses something in your path. Had a guy on the other side of a 4 lane highway run over something and tossed it in my lane. hit my 99' Ram. When I got home. I found a piece of a broken leaf spring about a foot long stuck in the lower part of my bed fender. i actually seen it coming and couldn't do anything about it.

Yessir, back when I had my ‘88 YJ I got a flat on a 33” mud tire. Ran over a damn pair of scissors of all things…

I’m still figuring out how I want to carry a spare tire on mine….that’s a whole other story. I keep my compressor, jack, brake cleaner(seal tire on rim) and a patch kit with me. No issues so far

I'm just on 35s, but I had a nail go through one of mine maybe a month ago. It just caused a slow leak, and I got it plugged, but it could have been worse.

Crazy. I’ve got a huge gash in one of my five 37’s. It could go any day. I ordered a replacement as soon as I noticed it yesterday.
