Hi Lift 48 or 60?

Should I choose a Hi Lift 48 or 60? If it matters my JTR has Mopar 2inch and 35's

  • 48 inch

  • 60 inch

  • Hi Lift's are dangerous/unnecessary/too expensive whatever

Land Rover guys always make sure they can get under the hood easily.
Believe it or not I actually wore out the cable release on my LR hood (bonnet) and had to replace!

Good point and thank you for the tips. I should probably get a jacking block but I usually have a couple of pieces of 2x6 or 2x8 for that purpose. Yes I'm cheap sometimes ?
Not with current prices for wood ?

I've got both 60 and 48" Hi-Lift jacks do I keep one in my LJ, but not currently in my JT. I've used the crap out of mine (both) for many years now no regrets on buying them. I've got a hydraulic bottle jack in JT and LJ. My Hi-Lift jacks have done some winching even recovering stuck vehicle out of limited access locations, lifting a security gate back in place after being struck by a vehicle. Breaking tire beads for repair or swapping out rim from wrong lug pattern.
OEM jacks are probably more dangerous than (un)common sense and a Hi-Lift jack. I responded to a disabled vehicle in road recently the owner had a flat tire and the OEM jack collapsed by blowing out where it cranked up. That happened as he was about to install the spare.

I also like to be dry and well lubricated. Perhaps the hi lift and I have more in common than I thought.


The biggest issue I've always had with the Hi-lift is that it likes to be dry and well lubricated. Probably a non-issue for the desert dwellers, but up here where everything rusts, its a challenge.
Secondary problem is mounting- a hilift will smash everything around it to pieces if left unrestrained.

Here’s a closeup. On the bottom and rear sides I used 50# mounting tape and you can see the bolt I ran thru the box side existing hole. I really like the setup is easy side access (60” is heavy) and it’s never in the way.

Thank you. So you remove the spreader attachment thingy (technical jargon sorry) to store in the bed. That was the part confusing me. This is a good idea thank you!

No, nothing removed…the winch-clamp-spreader attachment I just put toward the middle of the rail. Here’s a better pic. The only points of contact are the 2 bolts on the base and the rail cradled into the notch in the 2x10’s. Lifts in and out really easily.
