24 gladiator the gas gauge doesn't seem as well defined as in other jeeps I have had. Where its easy to see half full and quarter. I have been going by the miles to empty numbers and am curious how accurate it is. Currently it says 80.2 miles to empty but the gauge looks close to empty. My jeep has just below 500 miles so have been babying it. What do you all think?

Thanks

I think the estimated until empty is overly conservative. I routinely run mine down to 20 miles to empty and I normally can only put in 17 gallons. Per Jeep, we have 22 gallon tanks.

The gauge (and thus the estimated miles left) is very dependent on whether the truck is level in that moment.

not sure how long it takes the computer to fully learn your driving habits, but the estimation should become more accurate the more miles you put on the truck.

it's accurate based on your current and historical driving data. If you stop for the night and it says 40 miles left, depending on many factors, the next morning could say 35 or even 50. It's based on what it knows, historical averages and how things are at that moment. I've watched it stay at 110 for example, for 4 miles, because I got into slower speed limits and more casual driving situations. I've also watched it go from just for example 80 down to 75 inside of 2 miles because I turned into the wind and got into some hills.

I find it not bad - it IS conservative, but don't push it. If it says 20 there may actually be 35 left, even 40, but it won't say 40 and then you run out of fuel 2 miles later unless you really push it hard.

You'll never get that 22 into it. I've come awfully close - I've gotten a bit over 21 in it, but I was driving on E for a while. That 22 gallon capacity is also dependent on that truck being 150% totally and undeniably level. Any tilt in any direction and it's off.
I've gotten anywhere from 19 to just over 21 in, but that's me going by my observations about my own vehicle, learning how it learns and reacts to me and so on. Typical is more like 18, maybe 18.5 depending on a few things.
Don't forget that if you fill it and then park it and live where the daytime temps may hit the 80s, you now have an over-filled tank and can mess up the evaporative emissions big-time. I've filled fuel containers, taken them home and the weather gets hot and I go out to find gas all over the floor of the garage. Gasoline expands badly and it's typically sitting in the ground at under 60 degrees.

It is not at all accurate towards the bottom.

I ran mine pretty low last week. It showed 31 miles remaining for about 20 miles, then it fell below 20. About 15 miles later it went back up to 25 miles remaining. I added 2.5 gallons from a can and when I started it back up it just said Low.

I don't baby a new vehicle. I don't abuse it, but I vary the speed and RPM a lot. If I babied it, I'd never make it onto some of our highways with the up-hill entrance ramps and facing into a 25 mph wind. I don't drive sustained high RPM, but I don't try to keep it under any certain RPM either. I drive it like I'm going to drive it and always have, even on engines I have rebuilt myself.
It may be saying you have 80 miles left because of extremely conservative driving - check your average mpg and current mpg numbers (scroll up or down with the arrows on the left and you can see those numbers)

Like I said earlier - it's based on information from your driving history, as well as current information - including the fuel level which will vary with inclines and curves and hills (although it's buffered) as well as your current driving mode.
I've found it to be quite good - even down low, over the last almost 5 years of driving Gladiators - and Jeeps in general. My wife's former Grand Cherokees were really good at those numbers. Pretty accurate, all things considered.
This system isn't new at all - it dates back probably almost a decade and has been used in other FCA vehicles for years.

Fuel flow cools the fuel pump. You don’t want to run too low as it can damage your fuel pump.
Years ago my friend with a BMW went through 5 fuel pumps because of running on empty all the time.
That’s another reason it is conservative.

If you get that low, you should know it. At least any alert driver should.
Fuel pressure will drop, there will be indications. Can't suck air and maintain pressure and combustion integrity. It'll "hiccup". That's been my experience, anyway. Unreal that people actually ignore the SOUNDS and the engine struggling as the fuel pressure drops. You really have to be ignoring it - and literally empty. Periodic pulling air won't do it - repeated - yes. What a fool he must have been.

I have an in-tank pump in my SX4 - and the tank has no baffles as I didn't want to cut open a perfectly good rust-free rare fuel tank to install them. When I get below 1//4 tank and take a tight turn, or nail it going up a steep hill - I can tell exactly when that pump sucks air.

I ran mine (partially by accident) pretty low, Around 30 miles remaining the light came on,, just after 27 miles, it just said, LOW FUEL.

I drove another 10 mls to the pump. Filled up 20.5 gal.

10 miles left and I was able to squeeze 21 gallons in .

I know about how far I can go on a tank of gas. I check the fuel level when I start it, and periodically while traveling. I was raised to always refill around a half tank and not to let it get below a quarter full.
