How many law breakers are there in New Jersey? Or, are you curious if your non-NJ JT is illegal someone other than where you live?

I even provided a tldr that explicitly states 38.5 inch tires with a 4.5 inch lift is still legal, as long as you don't have a stubby bumper and you have either no poke or mud flaps on the rear.

37s on a 2 inch lift just needs a lifted vehicle inspection
Jersey can inspect these nuts.

Local cop swings by my house weekly to see what I'm up to, he's in love with my JT. It's lifted, the wheels poke out nearly 3 inches, no flaps, registered/inspected etc in NJ. They really don't care, escpecially since the inspection rules change every couple years.

Just ran across this:
Subchapter 37 - STANDARDS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES WITH ELEVATED CHASSIS HEIGHT | State Regulations | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute (cornell.edu)

TLDR:
1. NJ has a special inspection for lifted vehicles. This includes ANY body lift, or tire size gains over 4 inches from the maximum factory available tire size (never seen this sticker ever, and I've seen tons of lifted trucks) Therefore all you guys running 36.5 k02s on unlifted mojaves don't need special inspections. Anything bigger than 36.7 or even the tiniest .75inch leveling kit needs a special sticker.

2. While NJ has no restrictions for stubby bumpers on un-lifted vehicle, lifted vehicles cannot have stubby bumpers

3. 40s are illegal in NJ on gladiators (but legal on wranglers manufactured recently, due to the xtreme recon package). True 39s are also illegal, but 38.5 39s are fine

4. Poke is okay on un-lifted. Illegal on lifted trucks. Unless you have good mudflaps (i'm pretty sure pro-poke people are anti-mudflap people 99% of the time)

5. Might have to skid plate your fuel tank, and potentially your exhaust.

6. Caster must remain (but not required to be at factory levels)

7. No wheel spacers on lifted vehicles

8. Gladiator maximum lift is 9 inches. A 285/70r17 to a 39.5 with a 4.5 inch lift is 7.895 inches, so pretty much everyone is safe here.
Thats a statute from the 90’s dude. They only inspect cars for emissions now. Close thread.

My stock JTRD GVWR is 6450lbs. Bottom of front bumper is 19", rear is 20.5". I can go to 27" in the front and 29" in the rear. I can lift it 8".
100% stock jku 75th Sahara, not even a Rubicon. Bumper height: 20 inches. A rubi would be already passed the limit in our state, from the factory, since they consider the Wrangler an SUV rather than a truck. The 75th has the same bumpers as a Rubicon

While the state changed from "Safety Inspections" to "Emission Testing" about 12 years ago, the statute regarding lifted vehicle inspections (NJAC 13-20-37.3) still remains in effect. The years I had it on my YJ, a separate sticker was applied under or over the regular inspection sticker, taking up valuble real estate on an already small windshield. Funny thing is, I've never noticed one on any other vehicle.

When I was there, they drove the truck on a scale, weighed it, and then drove 2 wheels up a ramp with the other 2 wheels still on the scale, and measured the weight again. If the second weight was more than like 55% of the total, you failed automatically. Of course if the truck flipped, you REALLY failed, lol.

lived in jersey all my life until I moved to ny 6 years ago when I turned 60.
got away with over due inspection for almost a whole year before I got a ticket. Now just by the echo diesel and you don't even have to go to inspection!!!!!! how stupid are they?

Most states that have safety inspection will have a height law on the books. In most cases unless you have something unsafe no one will check/enforce it. If you live in a rural area register as farm vehicle than no rules whatsoever.
PA state police definitely do. I got pulled over in my XJ once. The cop started listing everything than noticed my inspection was one week out of date. He gave me that ticket as it was easier and cheaper that the ten other things.

I do remember at the time you could pay the extra money to register an SUV as a truck to get more bumper height.

Both of my Jeeps are illegal in PA.

I’ve got the Mopar lift, -12 offset wheels, 37” BFG’s and a stubby bumper on my JTSD. All the mods were on before I even got my permanent tags. Got it inspected at the state station with no issue. (I know it’s emissions only - but you’d think someone would say something) The one guy working there jokingly asked me if I wanted to trade wheels and pointed to his lifted JK.

I think it’s like a lot of things on the road - technically illegal, but you have to rub someone the wrong way to actually get a ticket for it.

Emissions and? Emissions and? Emissions and? Emissions and lifting the Jeeper.

All of these "laws from the 90s dude" are still in effect. Safety inspections for normal vehicles may be done, but safety inspections for lifted vehicles are not.

for what it's worth, it is absolutely true that 99.99% of cops either don't know about this or don't care. The point isn't to say "driving a lifted vehicle with a stubby bumper makes you enemy #1 and hunted for life". It's more along the lines of "imagine you're having a bad day and get into a car accident. Maybe you roll up on the car a little. Now imagine you get just that perfectly wrong claims adjuster who does know the laws in NJ, and all the sudden your insurance wont pay to fix your Jeep because you've been operating it illegally"

It's a question of risk vs reward. Is the chance your insurance tries to fuck you small? I'd imagine so. If they did, would you have a leg to stand on? Likely none. Is a very small chance at a huge loss worth a stubby bumper and skipping the mud flaps? Not for me to decide. But the people making that decision deserve all the facts before choosing, dont they?

I had a 4 door TJ that had a 4" lift and 33- had to go for a tip over test every 2 year - it was a real pain. But the last few times at MV inspection I have see lifted jk's going through regular inspection. They use to be very strict on the tire not protruding past the fender - would put a framing square next to tire- it had to hit fender first or you failed.

As someone from Jersey who just recently moved out (8 months ago) these laws are still in effect.

However.

No one cares unless they get you for doing something else. All of my jeeps have been completely illegal when it comes to tires, poke, and front bumper. Never received a ticket. Inspection was always fine. No one cares unless you are doing something dumb and get pulled over, then you might get tickets for all the other shit. However only staties could give those tickets as they are the only ones that are DOT certified to do so in Jersey.

I moved to PA, and now I am not allowed to drive without my doors on ?

Its funny how 5% of people in this thread dont even live in the state. Ive had lifted jeeps for the last 20 years and not once have i been pulled over or had to inspect it for a “ lifted condition” .
