The 4.0L was barely sufficient on the highway in a lifted tj or XJ that weighs 3500lbs. People are on here daily complaining about the power output of the 3.6L... that makes 100hp more than that old tractor motor. Crawling it was great, on road it was underwhelming at best. I'd take the 5.7L for the mojave any day of the week. The way I use the thing high revving in the desert, the diesel just isn't the right engine. The Hurricane could be good, but the complexity is a bit much.

I would have chosen 3.0 EcoDiesel or 5,7.

Wouldn't mind if the 5,7 is a LS6 (or LS7) ...

I was excited about the hurricane until I realized how complex it was. Shouldn't have surprised me. The no oil dipstick thing is a bummer too.

How reliable is the 5.7? What is its weakness?

4BT, for when you want the same torque output of the 3.6L (not a lot) and half the horsepower? It's a great crawler motor in a light weight short wheelbase rig, the gladiator is none of those. It would work OK if you're building a dedicated crawler, but the wheelbase and departure angles aren't great for that. Not saying it couldn't be done, but the gladiator is the last vehicle I'd but a 4BT in.

Sorry I didn't read the title correctly. I'm new to this forum. Most of my jeep experience is with older jeeps, before JT's existed. My buddies and I used to stuff 4BT's in CJ's or YJ's and had years of great fun with those. They were an easy swap and worked well for our trail rigs as we could all share tools and spares. I guess I'm partial to the old days. Used to do some math, and swap a plastic gear to calibrate the speedo rather than buying tazers etc.. But then again we didn't have power windows, wide screen TV's in the dash, and power heated seats either.

Or the ability to comfortably drive those trail rigs cross country at freeway speeds. Sure my old xj was simple and reliable with its straight 6, but even just driving it a few hours away to the rubicon trail kinda sucked. The JLUR and JT are comfortable driving 10+ hours away to go wheeling in AZ or UT. That just wasn't something we'd do in our old trail rigs. What's crazy is the JLUR is even better off road than those old nearly trail only rigs.

I had a 5.7 in my 2014 Ram 1500 and it was great minus the tick caused by broken exhaust manifold bolts. After two fixes I traded it in but that was really the only thing I didn't like about the engine. The MPGs were pretty decent until I lifted the truck and added bigger wheels and tires. I figured the 5.7 would be ideal for the Gladiator, 400 hp/400 tq and not a huge engine. At least it didn't look huge in the engine bay of the Ram! No mechanical issues for 60,000+ miles.
