Remember that this is what they are charging Jeep for. So if they can make an extra half of a quart on every oil change, then that either goes right into profit, or some employee takes advantage of the inventory overage for his own oil change.
Yep. It’s crap. I’ve personally done 6 changes on my ‘21 3.6. Never has it needed more than 5 quarts to properly fill.

Why does everyone instantly take a known practice and make it into some kind of weird conspiracy?
Not a conspiracy. Just dealers not being detail oriented, and then getting more income as a result. It’s not much of a stretch.

Now I remember why I try to avoid oil change threads. They're almost always just garbage.

I mean really, who cares what they bill Jeep for? That's got nothing to do with you or your truck. There's no malice or anything here. And it's not something dealerships are making enough money off of either to really care. The core of this is that once opened, the entirely of the oil is considered sold and used. What they do with it after they open it is up to them, but they can't keep it to sell on the next customer's vehicle.

Like you said, known practice. No conspiracy. I spent 20 years running parts and service. There is no money in an oil change. We called those loss leaders. Factory usually pays 2 tenths to do it, not enough time to pull it in and do paperwork. Their only hope is that first line of inspection where they can upsell you something.
Now when they double bill labor to remove a part that already has to be removed for the initial job, that's dirty. Like to R&R a new drive belt when you are already paying for a waterpump job.

Weird conspiracy? This is the Internet, the bar for weird conspiracies is set pretty high. I have to go, Zombie Elvis just broke into the War Room. TTYL

I certainly get that. But I don't get why they would need to open a 6th quart when the specs call for 5 quarts with a filter change? So conceivably the engine might need slightly less than exactly 5qts if it didn't drain properly (although in practice, such a minuscule amount is meaningless), but it should never need MORE than 5qts.

Exactly. Isn’t math fun?

Trying to get me my free oil change and they are saying my Jeep wave is canceled wtf!! Things not even a year old wonder if this is why my uconnect doesn’t work
Considering my window sticker states "Jeep Wave Membership (Retail Sales/50 States Only)", I would say I paid for it as part of my overall purchase price and they cannot cancel it until it expires.

Believe the Jeep Wave program is 3 yrs from the date of purchase. On mine it shows from 2/28/22 to 2/27/25.

At the dealership we use, they get the oil in 35 gallon drums and pump it in being that most of the vehicles they do are Jeep, or dodge and they use the same oil in most not all but most 3.6 and the same with the 6.7 Cummins, or the Hemi’s they use the same oil if they share the same engine. Even the John Deere dealer has the hydraulic fluid in drums, if I buy a 5 gallon bucket of hydraulic fluid from them, and I take the empty bucket back they will refill it for a pretty good discount. I don’t think they actually use quarts of oil, I could be wrong though. As long as I’m not paying for it, bill them for 24 quarts.

@Jocww please tell us that you didn’t really pay $300 for an oil change.
Yes there are horror stories of oil changes getting botched but consider that most oil change ‘techs’ are beginning their career. The good news is that compared to an oil change shop, if the dealer makes a mistake they should also be capable of fixing it.
Yes , I do my own out of convenience. I can have oil and filters delivered to our shop and the nearest dealer is a half hour away. Not worth the drive.

And they over filled you as I see you where billed 6qts you only take 5
Not necessarily. Sometimes if it goes over the 5 by a little bit, it shows 6. They round up.
I've found 6 on my paperwork but it was just a tad over 5 - and it won't hurt a thing.
Anything over 5 is charged as 6. Anything over 6 is charged as 7.

I've had several "wave" changes on 2 trucks and even when it said 6, I could check and find it only a little over full.
