Please only respond if you went from a JL or a JK.

Alright Jeepers. I am thinking of making the switch to the JTR (or Mojave) from my JLUR. I've been a long time Jeep Wrangler owner (6 different Wranglers since 1999) and currently have a 73 CJ5 & 2018 JLUR in the garage so I know what I got. For those of you that have made the switch please tell me your thoughts. Why did you do it, any regrets, is it worth the switch, all the good and BAD parts about making the switch.

There are the obvious reason, towing, bed, cool new Jeep truck and all that stuff. I'm looking for more of the down to earth daily driver, weekend warrior good and bad.

Thanks RJ

I just picked up a new Sport S with Max tow from moving on from my 2013 JKU. I debate it for a long time and so far I have no regrets and am loving the JT. My family had so much fun in the JKU that I was hesitant to move on but we recently bought a boat that was sketchy to haul with the JK. Felt that the towing of the JT would be a big upgrade. I also do a lot of hunting and really wanted to have a bed. That was always been my one knock on the JKU. As for driving them the JT definitely rides a lot smoother then the JK. Really notice a difference on the highway. My 5 year old was devastated when we told him we were selling the JK. But then when he saw the JT is instantly loved it. Now he keeps telling my wife she needs to get one. Looking forward to a whole new set of adventures in the JT with the family.

Sounds like you have been around Jeeps long enough to make the call. By that I mean the difference is pretty much what you would think.

Most of the advances were from JK to JL (horsepower, 8-Speed Automatic, etc). As for the JT...

Stability is better (longer wheelbase). Rides smoother (but not quieter).
You lose the rear storage area but gain the bed (so think cover if you want to store stuff out of site).
Breakover angle is not as good as a JL or JT.
Aftermarket parts are limited but coming online pretty quickly.
Softop is the best Jeep has ever made with regards to noise...however, totally different animal for storing.

This is the info I'm looking for! Thanks.
Yes I have been around Jeeps for a while and have a decent bit of knowledge of them. Stability, smoothness where assumed but it's nice to hear. Honestly when I found out the storage box under the back seat was removable, that was a game changer. With 2 large dogs I need a place to put them.
From what I'm reading, while sitting in the driver's seat you wouldn't know the difference between a JL & JT when it comes to functions. But you feel it when driving. MPG, turning radius, smoothness, comfort, etc. Is this a fair statement?

I have had a 2007 JKU, 2012 JKU Rubi (Manual), and 2017 JKU Rubi. The 2012 and 2017 were both turnkey from AEV with all the bells and whistles. For me it has been a great change.

Pros
  • The 8 speed instead of the 6 speed is a dream
  • Learning to love the adaptive cruise control
  • Interior upgrades and android car support are fantastic
  • Rode much smoother out the gate (adding the moper lift to the JT has made it a little stiffer but still better)
  • Removing the freedom panels is much easier than the JK since you don't have the two screws to get back in
  • Doors seem much lighter than the JK when removing them (could just be bad memory though)
  • Have had no issues parking compared to a full size truck (have to park in garages in MD/DC area for work
Cons

  • Not finding much I like in aftermarket bumpers right now (Not a problem with the truck)
  • Rear window has to be manually opened and closed (super small issue)
  • I get worse sat radio coverage than in any of the JKUs, not sure if the puck changed locations
  • Wish they made the mirrors a little bigger for towing
The cons for me are negligible, I am incredibly happy with the switch and would do it again in a heartbeat.

traded in my 2016 JKU on a Sport S. no complaints here.. enjoying the bed hauling capability.. had to delete my rear seat for my pooches.
Enjoying having a soft top again (last one was my 1998 TJ.
Frankly I thought Jeep shoulda come out with this truck 10 years ago.

I had a 2014 JKUR that I loved but always needed more space when on off road trips. My JTR LE does everything I need and then some. It’s a great truck for our needs

I have a JLUR and a JT. They drive similarly, but the JLUR is more nimble for off roading for obvious purposes. That being said I generally prefer driving the truck over the JLUR for daily driving and even for most off roading unless I’m doing more serious rock crawling (it’s just fun to drive). I’ll caveat that my JT does have a decent size lift on it.

Good: Versatility, towing and hauling, slightly quieter ride (rear wheel wells no longer inside the cab).
Bad: Slightly worse handling, under damped compared to the JLUR, 1mpg drop, slightly worse off-road, less accessories available (but more at launch)

Mine is as direct a comparison as can be as I traded my loaded JLUR in for an identical JTR. The only difference is the JTR has the adaptive cruise/collision warning that wasn't available on the '18's, and the JLUR had slush mats that the JTR didn't (but I added them). Otherwise they're the same including having the exact same color combo, steel bumpers and option wheels. I preferred the look of the JLUR option wheels but like the JTR's as well.

The good, for me, outweighs any of the bad. I can use it for so much more stuff and haven't found anything it can't do that I could in the JLUR, including off-road. I was honestly most worried about parking but it's way easier to park than my silverado and barely any more difficult than the JLUR. I had a JLUR and a silverado, replaced both with one vehicle.

I plan to add some adjustable shocks as the stockers are great on a washboard road, ok when unloaded on the highway, but pretty awful when loaded. Way too much bounce. I preferred the ride of the JLUR, and I think it's almost all down to the shocks.

There are currently less accessories available for the JT than the JL, but there are more than at a similar time in JL ownership. I got both in May when they were just released and there was almost nothing out for the JL for 6 months or so, while a lot of JL stuff fit the front half of the JT even if nothing else was out. Tthe ramp up on JT accessories was pretty quick comparatively. I swapped the winch over from my JL, added roxblox mudflaps and a fas-top tonneau/topper for the bed. Wish I'd done the mudflaps eariler, they keep the sides (and my kids) a LOT cleaner, especially if there's any snow/slush.

Thanks for all your replies. I went to the dealership tonight to have a conversation. The really bad news for me is they no longer offer the JT in Pumpk'n. I love my JL with the pump'n color and really wanted the JT in the same color. Unfortunately within 300 miles of where I live there are only seven offered and only two match my criteria. I made a couple online inquiries so let's see what they will do.

Fair statement. Maybe slightly more comfortable. Turning radius is a bit more...but withing acceptable parameters. MPG went down for me...but I also have the max tow package.

For the most part, it is a JL from the back door forward.

One thing I am already starting to 2nd guess is no soft top that completely lowers. I’m in the north east so I have only had the freedom tops off once. I think I am going to miss having a true softop but overall I really love my truck. I had a 14 JLU before this. The only thing I true hate is the lack of storage for the driver. The JLU had a little net thing just past the shifter you could slide a wallet or phone in. The JT has very limited storage. I got over it but that is the only thing I truly didn’t like.

Of my previous 2 JKU’s I’ve had and miss is the turning radius... on the JT it sucks compared to a wrangler but it’s better than a full size pickup. On the trail, I have to 3 point turn a lot... I mean a lot.

I have a JL and a JT. If I had to choose one over the other I'd choose the JL. The JT definitely drives nicer but the JL IMO is more utilitarian. My dog fits better in the JL. Interior cargo space in JL makes a huge difference.

More utilitarian than a truck? I've found the opposite, but I have a smaller (~35lbs) dog, so he fits fine in a back seat. With a soft topper on the bed, I have ~2x the enclosed cargo space vs. my JLUR...
