The key don't actually bother me, the size of the FOB seems to be mostly to accommodate the key blade, and the board inside is only about the size of the buttons on the face. I guess they wanted to make sure that JT and JLs had a solid key

That being said the RAM Vans use the same key blade and their FOBs are only a fraction of the size and don't pop open on their own.

If I had to speculate the key was designed to not be pulled out that often to lock and unlock doors as most Jeeps have Passive Entry (I know not all do), this is also hinted at that the remote start button is 2x larger than the lock and unlock indicating that its the button they expect you to be hitting the most often. I think they expected it to treated more like a TV Remote and less like a key.

If the key opening all the time bothers you there are a few ways to keep it closed.

Ah yes, sudden panic. At least make me press and hold the panic button for a second before going off. Are all brands like this?

I fly da plane...
Then you can't use the key!
The heat shrink will slide off. But I never use the key anyway. A friends Jeep had the glove box and center console ripped open. I don't mind if someone steals my mints. I would use a rubber band if I were to use the key.

The Key fob with the exposed button to flip the key out./open is a major pain in the pocket.. Are you frustrated with the design of this key fob?
What cover have you purchased to limit or prohibit the opening of the Key without your input? BTW, it was modified design (at least for the 2023) The 2021 was worse.
I like my '21 Gladiator keyfob better than the one for my '16 JK Rubicon Limited.
The one for my JK always false alarms on me.

If you know anyone with a 3d printer ,there is a thin wall plastic clip on retainer that can be printed in about 15 minutes, the free downloadable file is on Thingverse under JEEP as are many other things like badges and stuff

They don't float! Another good feature is that when it sank in the pond it was big enough to find with my eyes closed. They must be somewhat waterproof, that fob is still working.
mine went through the washer .. was not as lucky

Take the spring out. That's what I've done and no poke.

I guess if it works, it works but the aesthetics of that would bug the living crap out of me.

For an SOS key to be that quickly accessible when it is never used, is beyond me. Damn thing opens in my dress pants all the time at work and has frayed a pair or two. Why?

It isn't just your "SOS" key. It locks the console, glove box, and behind the seat storage we all have. It gets used! I lock things.
