Being this close to production I doubt it for the first couple years. I'll just have to do an engine swap to the new tech when the original deisel dies in 15+ years.

After taking a long off highway trip this past week (225+ miles off-road) the diesel is definitely what I am getting. I think the range and power in a JT doing some point to point exploring trips will be just about perfect. Really hoping we see it as an option right at launch. I don't want to have to wait any longer than I need to.

I'm impressed by how little my WK CRD was affected by load on my last trip. 3.0 Mercedes, got 17-18 mpg on a 1300 mile trip averaging 70+ along Interstate 5, with 5 adults, bikes, loaded rooftop box, and a 16' pop-up trailer. Never slowed down for uphill grades either.

I actually have a diesel Gladiator (CJ8) and DD a 2016 GC Ecodiesel. I have put about 45K on my GC and have thoroughly enjoyed every mile, I average just over 30mpg in W. Tennessee (pretty flat) and occasionally pull a 16' trailer with ease. I am absolutely stoked that FCA is going to (Finally) build a Wrangler Pickup, if they actually do put the 3.0L in it that would a great setup. I am hoping for a new 6 speed manual to go with it.

Welcome to the madness! Glad to hear you have been enjoying the Ecodiesel and are getting worthwhile MPG returns. A lot of us are very interested in the diesel JT for the power and mileage gains over the V6 Pentastar.

I agree Billy. I don't think they are going to go the manual/diesel route with the JT unfortunately.

Completely understandable that FCA would use the existing auto w/ the 3.0L to start production, but it is Very difficult to imagine the Wrangler with no manual trans option (eventually). They just have to sell enough diesel Wranglers to justify the R&D on a new 6spd

It's a numbers game.

First, there is very slim selection of available manual trannies, sized for a mid-sized truck, compatible with a transfer case, and rated for 442 ft\lbs of torque. The next thing is the few numbers they will be able to sell with the diesel. Sticks are a dying breed. And the truck itself will be a fairly low number sold. So the very expensive certification process will never pan out. IMHO.

The problem is the diesel entry price is going to be considered high end for the the mid-size market place (Rumors are the JT will start at $45k) so diesels JTs will be mid 50s most likely. With upper market buyers historically they choose Auto over Manuel transmissions by a large %, so while I think there are a bunch of people hoping for a manual those that would actually buy it would be such a low % that it dosen't make the business case to offer it.

Hey man! Welcome to the forum. It’s awesome that the diesel is working out for ya. I do have some questions though. Have you had any reliability Issues? How’s that maintenance? Can you do anything yourself or do you take it to a shop? How’s the price on set maintenance? Have you done any mods? Man I can’t wait for this thing to come out. The itch is real...
